No. 4 FOUNTAIN VALLEY (7-0, 2-0) VS. NEWPORT HARBOR (4-3, 1-1)

Where, when: Newport Harbor High, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: There is a lot of excitement about next week’s Fountain Valley-Edison “Battle for the Bell” game – and that’s not good for Fountain Valley. The Barons cannot look past Newport Harbor to their big rivalry game against Edison. Newport is good. The Sailors beat Los Alamitos two weeks ago, handing Los Al its first loss, then got clobbered by a terrific Edison team, 34-6, last week. Edison can make good teams look bad (see “Edison 23, Servite 9” for details).

Fountain Valley has that offensive balance Edison has, and that gave Newport trouble last week. The Barons, led offensively by Kyle Middlebrooks (172 yards a game) at running back and Dominic Ragland at quarterback, should win, and Edison should beat Los Al on Friday, setting up an insane Bell game (already there is a ton of controversy on Bell game ticket distribution). A loss does not kill Newport’s playoff chances. The Sailors follow with very winnable games against Marina and Esperanza, and that victory over Los Alamitos could be a huge tiebreaker when it comes to determining playoff berths.

Winner: Fountain Valley

Frankly Fryer: Valencia vs. Kennedy

Frankly Fryer: San Clemente vs. Tesoro

Frankly Fryer: Villa Park vs. El Dorado

Frankly Fryer: Orange vs. Segerstrom

Frankly Fryer: Los Alamitos vs. Edison

Middlebrooks back i hear about 90%, cant look ahead to the showdown with the counties best Edison, this Newport team is all over the place and has fooled me a couple times this year so hopefully im not fooled again but who knows they can be dangerous but im goin with FV here in a close one FV28 NH 24

  • wall street loser says:

Middlebrooks has been playing at 90% the whole season. Get off your edison high horse and come back down to reality. FV 35 NH 14.

  • keeping it real says:

FV hasnt played anyone yet. Edison smacks you in the mouth and takes the bell back to Magnolia and Hamilton where it belongs. Marina and esperanza are the two bottom feeders of the league and your non league schedule was an absolute joke. November 6th is when you play someone legit.

It’s true that Fountain Valley hasn’t played any seriously strong teams yet. Their highest ranked opponent so far was Tesoro (ranked only 78 in state). Newport Harbor (ranked 51 in state) will be the toughest opponent so far. Dana Hills beat NPH 41-7 but I don’t think FV will be able to put 41 pts on NPH because FV is over-rated (good team, but over-hyped and over-rated). NPH beat Los Alos and can very well take this game, too.
    I’m predicting a tight score.

  • wall street loser says:

Edison is so great we should just hand them the championship right now. Why are we even bothering playing games with them. Mater Dei should have beaten them but missed the field goal. EDSION IS THE MOST OVERHYPED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. GIVE ME A BREAK!

  • Edison is rated #1 in the County by all voters………..they dont do it with mirrors UNTIL someone beats them they have earned the right to be #1 and NH, FV arent one of the teams that will beat them, yes they will be tested on the way to the finals and ok there is a chance they will get beat but wall street until then they are #1, dont care how they did it the beat EVERY team they played what more do you want , …….. rank em at say 8 and let them earn the top spot?? up till now they HAVE EARNED it ……………………just dont understand what your trying to say or what is behind this bizarre thinking………..personal problem maybe???

  • keeping it real says:

wall street loser I dont think ESPN has edison overrated. only 41st in the nation and maxpreps has them at 16th. Im sorry that FV is going to be waxed up and down the stadium where ever we play you guys this year, just be ready. Your one man show of middle brooks and no one else comes to an end next week. Good luck trying to defend all weapons. Oh yeah ask Servite, Dana Hills, Mater Dei, and Newport how over rated Edison is. Mater Dei game was a let down but bad reffing and a star player out edison still won that game and that missed field goal your talking about was a BLOCKED field goal. Two of them i might add. Be ready for a good old fashioned A$$ beating november 6th.

    Hey, didn’t I call it?!?
I said it would be a tight score. 37-32 FV.

So Steve, with your reasoning that FV should have been ranked higher than Dana Hills last week because of Tesoro being the common opponent that FV beat by 35-14 and Dana beat by 37-34.
But Dana Beat Newport Harbor 41-7 and FV only beat them by 5 points (37-32).

So is Dana going to move up to #4 next week?

Dana beat San Clemente 38-14 and SC just beat Tesoro. What did I tell you about these “emo” games. They are harder to read and tighter in scores.

  • keeping it real says:

If FV plays the way they did last night against edison its a 56-0 blowout.
