O.C. football: Best fans?

October 27th, 2009, 11:32 am · · posted by

football_blog5Who are Orange County’s best football fans?

Are they the supporters who show up each week to celebrate the good times with a program that always wins? Or maybe they’re the diehards who don’t let little things like losing seasons and the lack of postseason play stop them from being loyal to their team.

This might be the toughest of our categories to pick because there are so many things that go into being good fans. Are they knowledgeable? Are they boisterous? Are they good sports, win or lose?

We’ll make our call on Orange County’s top fans soon, but now is your chance to convince us that your favorites belong on our list. Use the comments field below to make the case for the fans you think top all others in Orange County.

  • la habra, just look at blogs,go to game and home side is packed no matter who we are playing

    • LHFanFromChino says:

Definately La Habra. When we are away we out number the home team fans. Whether its San Clemente, or any other location. La Habra fans love La Habra football.

    • the kid says:

amen to this! Clan fans are pretty loud no matter where the game is at. You have to go extra early to an away LH game cuz the stands are packed!

  • hsfootballrules says:

Gotta give it to La Habra…My top 5 is as follows:

    1. La Habra
    2. Mission Viejo – Great student body support
    3. Trabuco Hills – Travels well and supports away better than anyone
    4. Edison – Great combo of all the above
    5. Mater Dei – Great alumni and community support

  • football fan says:

Servite high school win or lose the fans are there. We never have enough seats no matter where we are home or away.

  • UHwarrior says:

    1. La Habra – Unbeleivable FAN and community support for the past
    10 years
    2. Servite- An Alumni Association that extends into the dark ages
    3. Mission- Loud and proud Student section, face paint mandatory.
    4. Trabuco Hills- large traveling FAN base at away-games
    5. Mater Dei- They have FANS who have no ties to the school whatsoever.

  • Thhfan says:

Trabuco has awesome fans, starting with the support from the administrators, they actually come to the games too. The spirit of ASB handing out long balloons, tossing T-shirts into the crowd and running around like crazy people with big flags. The band making music inbetween plays and leading the team on the field in drum cadence. Cheer leaders making posters for each player that cover half the stadium, plus two huge banners to run through, decorate their lockers and leave gifts every game day . The student section is usually packed with some very creative game wear, face paint and chants, many travel to away games as well. The boosters, they make sure the boys are well fed, the stadium is decorated, have a nice game program, snack bars, 50/50 tickets and fan wear, and feed the coaches on film review day. There is a large number of alumni players and parents that come to every game that reunite on the field after the game, win or lose. The greatest thing about TH fans is they all get along, make a lot of noise and really make it fun and memorable for all, especially the boys.

  • I love La Habra, yep — my favorite place to see a game. Superb fans.

But sheer numbers and vocal volume — Servite. For a school with 867 kids, amazing.

MD is close … San Clemente … Edison … OLu is gaining … Mission Viejo …

  • La Habra without a doubt ………….Tie for 2nd in my book Servite and Trabuco Hills, from there really hard to say alot of schools have a definite argument but no can compare with the fans of the Highlanders of La Habra High unbelievable and un-matched

  • THHS rules says:

Trabuco Hills has great fans – parents, students, alumni, pop warner kids, people from the neighborhood. They all come out to support the team, even when they travel to Huntington Beach, Covina, Cerritos, etc. The cheerleaders are great. The students passing out balloons and shirts, everyone wearing white to the “white out” game, the flags flying; it is a great high school football experience from beginning to end, win or loss (preferably win!)

  • brewbandit says:

No question…La Habra… The whole city gets involved. The snack bar is the best an you must get there early to get a seat

  • nosoup4yu says:

Servite and La Habra seem to travel the best and be the loudest. Wherever the Friars play seems like their home game with their side of bleachers drenched with black. Clan fans very loud and supportive also. I’ve only seen Mission at home and they rock their side of the field bigtime. Edison has the best Sunset fan base both in numbers and noise from what I’ve seen.

  • bigfannofbandg says:

i have to say la habra fans are maybe good but there the worst iv ever seen towards the opposing teams, they have no respect

  • La Habra in at least the Southwest & Southeast conferences. If last year’s playoffs are any indication, I would have to put Trabuco Hills right in there too.

  • ..?? says:

no doubt in the world servite should be at the top. all the crazy chants (specifically the rollercoaster) and all the funky clothing that they wear each week

  • Pat says:

    1) Servite- 7K plus at home no matter who they are playing? Not only that but 2K showed up at Clovis west in FRESNO!!!!! that’s insane. Student crowd is always strong come on how can i not mention “THE PIT CREW” and like Fryer said the school has 800 kids!!!

    2) La Habra Great fans they show up every game and great support. They can get lowed and crazy and they are very respectful and great fans.

3Trabuco Hills-These fans are no joke they are true fans and are always at every game like someone said if they are away or home they show up. If they are losing with no chance of a come back the fans stay strong. And did i mention they can get loud!!!

    4) Mission Viejo – Their student fans alone can pack the stadium. I love going to Mission Viejo games feels like a college atmosphere type of game.

5)Mater Dei- In numbers they are always big. I was a bit disappointed on the outcome for the Mater Dei-Servite game I seen some open seat on Mater Dei Side. They must have seen it coming.

  • A Mom says:

    SERVITE!!!!!

  • hsfootballrules says:

Can’t disagree with anyone’s list except for Fryer’s. Honestly, Steve, San Clemente? Give me a break…I don’t think you have ever been to a Trabuco Hills game…The CIF play-off game at La Habra with Trabuco Hills last season was insane. Both sides were well-represented, the stands were packed and everyone was going nuts.

  • Southwest Div. Fan says:

    La Habra.

  • philidelphia pat says:

Hands down Servite. 7-10k per game. The school has only 800 boys and remember they do not even have a stadium. If they had a stadium they could fill 12k per game no sweat.

  • robert saavedra says:

Don’t forget El Toro– Travels well !!! Students are great fans make noise-chants great entertainment

  • thirtyplus says:

NOT University. I would estimate that less than 150 folks made the 15 minute trip ALL the way to Laguna Hills for the game last week. I felt bad for their players.

LHHS: “Hells Bells” is a great theme song as the team walks down the parent/fan lined ramp and onto the field. Since it’s a new stadium, it’s a tradition in the making. Talk to the coaching staff. They will tell you that no staff is better cared for by their boosters. (Yeah, I’m biased.) Putting the head coach at mid-field and releasing a hawk that flew the length of the field to his hand before a playoff game last year was quite a sight to see. Hey…..it ain’t bagpipes, (uber cool) but it was still cool.

    • the kid says:

LHHS as in Laguna Hills right? Cuz at La Habra we dont got no hawk

    • Junkyard says:

I agree with your point on Uni. Probably 2k at the MOST for their hyped 40th Anniversary game. And the first game on-campus. Ended up not being as big a deal as people made it out to be. Nice thought, not a great turnout.

  • Sarah says:

    CYPRESS FANS!! LINE SIX BABY!!!!

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

    1. Servite
    2. La Habra
    3. Mater Dei
    4. San Clemente
    5. Trabuco Hills

  • Credo76 says:

    Servite – Hands Down!

I would like to see Servite play La Habra and Oaks Christian in non-league in upcoming years!

  • Highlander Fan says:

La Habra is the best place to watch a game, and has the most loyal fans. They are involved in the game as well as socializing with one another. There is a very wide variety of people who attend, and as it should be everyone gets along and has the ‘welcome mat’ out for visitors. The fans travel to every game too, often out numbering the home team crowd. Even when playing an “away” game in the LA Habra stadium the place is packed. The band is excellent and puts a nice soundtrack behind the action on the field. After the game the fans don’t stream out until the alma mater is sung by the cheer and team. Makes you want to tear up, football as only it can be done in OC.

  • ROVER says:

    Servite,#1 Fans

  • EdisonChargersDad says:

Edison High School fans are crazy loyal. For an upcoming game with the other school in our league, the homeside tickets sold out in 2-3 hours. Has your school ever seen that kind of response :)

  • WarTime says:

Obviously La Habra and Servite are off the charts, but here are some of the best other sets I’ve witnessed-

Mission Viejo-Their student section is hyped all game, and the other fans are into it, knowledgeable, and loud. You could see Tesoro was so shook by their crowd that the game (60-14) was over BEFORE kickoff.

Edison-One of the LOUDEST and travel well too. Can intimidate a visitor.

Los Al-Nobody mentioned them but I was impressed by the noise and support of these fans who also travel well.

OLu-After the opening prayer sets the tone, Lancer loudly fans get after it all game long, including one of the livest student groups.

Mater Dei-Their student section is loud and well organized, though the other fans seem sometimes to just be hangers-on.

WORST-Laguna Beach-The moms are comparing handbags, dads discussing 401(k)’s, students are at the beach, and the announcer is such a homer he sounds more like an analyst.

WORST #2-Its not in OC, but if you ever go to a game up at Oaks Christian, their fans are so clueless and spoiled they don’t even cheer (or realize) when the team scores a TD.

  • OCFootballFan says:

I remember the first time i went to a Servite game – it was as if i was a college football game. Fans are crazy supportive and the fans seem to be between the ages of 1 to 100.

I went to a game last year and same thing: These fans/alumni have staying power.

I read somewhere that at one Servite-MD game @ Angels Stadium, there were 25k people there, A LOT more in black than red.
    Amazing.

    EL MODENA ALL THE WAY!

  • family man says:

Orange Lutheran always has a ton of fans, and they always support the team, win or lose. They are also very gracious

  • los al rails all says:

Mater Dei fans got owned at their last v ball game
