football_blog6The top games on the Week 8 schedule:

No. 17 JSerra (6-1, 1-1) vs. No. 8 Mater Dei (3-4, 0-2)
Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Saddleback College

Outlook: The playoffs start, at least unofficially, this week for the Monarchs, who have lost their first two league games by a total of 13 points.

Now, the Monarchs have to run the table against JSerra, St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita to finish 3-2. Can they do it?

Mater Dei enters the week on a three-game losing streak. The Monarchs have lost the games by a combined total of 20 points.

Quarterback Max Wittek is starting to come around, but he has to cut down on the turnovers. In his previous three games against Edison, Orange Lutheran and Servite, Wittek completed 53 of 83 passes (63.8 percent) for 821 yards and six touchdowns.

He threw two interceptions in the games against Orange Lutheran and Servite.

Victor Blackwell has been unstoppable recently, catching 23 passes for 498 yards and five touchdowns in the past three games. Can the Monarchs turn these numbers into victories?

JSerra defeated Santa Margarita and led Orange Lutheran 14-0 before the Lancers scored 23 consecutive points for a 23-14 victory.

JSerra quarterback Bobby Brown has accounted for 19 touchdowns (13 passing and six rushing).

One more loss and the Monarchs will likely fall from the county’s Top 10.

Will JSerra deliver the final blow? Will a victory move JSerra into the top 10?
