Yes, my 11-25 rankings for boys water polo are back, and back with authority this week. The competition for these spots has been ultra-intense as the season drives toward the postseason.
Here's my best read of the power structure - and as always, those 21-25 spots are toughest for me to figure
11. Servite
12. Northwood
13. Huntington Beach
14. El Modena
15. Santa Margarita
16. Dana Hills
17. Capo Valley
18. Foothill
19. Katella
20. Irvine
21. Beckman
22. Laguna Hills
23. University
24. Aliso Niguel
25. Edison
Dan - Never fear about 20-25, since it is impossible to decipher. #20 to 23 are in the PCL, and none seem eager to take charge of 2nd place. Based on recent results alone, Laguna Hills seems best of the bunch but then lost to Beckman in a game that was inconsistent with their previous results. Beckman has been solid, but lost twice to Woodbridge, whom the other three beat. Uni lost to LH in sudden-death double overtime at LH, and then played San Clemente to a tough 9-8 loss at SC. Irvine seems like a top 10 world beater one day but not the next. They all play each other over the next two weeks. Should be interesting!
Irvine is a young WINNING team and learning what it takes to be top 10 and championship like players - two sophomores and two juniors start and ALL on on the leaderboard stats for goals, assist, steals. They are coming together nicely. They should take 2nd in PCL.
Woodbridge falls out of the top 25 (if Trumball plays defense, they are good, if not then he can score a lot of goals but they still lose). Best player to watch is Zack Tudhope (Sophomore goalie who is learning from Garrett Danner of El Toro).
Northwood appears to be a solid second in their league and the best matchup for the 1st round of CIF would be Northwood/Irvine (starting the new league for next year early). From early Blog - if the two shooters start scoring then Northwood wins - check out Jack Mayer (assist stats are climbing).
Irvine has a good chance Thursday after Huntington Beach takes their lumps Wed. against El Toro. Huntington starts 5 sophomores and a junior so will be interesting how they handle. Also interesting will be the Huntington - Laguna Beach match next week.
like the list. think el mo is better than 14. they should be at 11 or 12. they lost a tough game by 1 at san clemente and i've seen hb and servite and think servite is too high. flip flop servite and el mo and you are close in my eyes. all in all things are starting to pan out. dan you do great job covering this sport and cif will decide it all for us anyway.
This weeks biggest winners:
Wow! Beckman joins the top 25 at 21! I know you had to put them ahead of LH, but they’ve been beat by #25 Edison, #24 Aliso and now unranked Tustin and Woodbridge??? I agree with stats “20-25 is impossible to decipher” but their more fairly placed 24th or 25th.
Katella - Does a division VII team even belong in the top 25? I think this one does, but not at 19. They are solid team that deserves some respect, but the win over Irvine was a fluke. Their record has earned a spot in the same range as Beckman.
Dana Hills makes a meteoric move (back) up 4 spots to #16. Although Dana couldn’t make any impact against SC and lost to LBP, they deserved to move ahead of Capo and Foothill.
This weeks Biggest Looser
Irvine - Hey, you didn’t rank Capo #11 after their win against HB? Why should Katella have entered the top 25 so high? And Irvine beat Foothill? They fairly deserve to be at least two spots higher.
Oh, you want my opinion on ElMo?? I’d hoped the boys would have faired better against #8 Laguna Beach last night. They probably would have done a little better if Lucas Spencer, our #2 player, hadn’t sat out the game because of an injury in our game with LBP. That said, we took the same beating (11-6) that #9 Esperanza got an hour earlier! Looks like we get to play Riverside Poly Friday. That should be a fun game to watch.
Dan, the top 25 was your best idea ever! I love it and waste wayyy… too much time playing with it.
Thanx,
ElMo Dad
Beckman at 21? Woodbridge+Tustin out? Katella that high up?
I dont care, Dan you cover this sport well
I like the coverage, but I agree. Moving Beckman to 21 is a bit much. Laguna Hills was their only win. How about some University love? They already beat Capo by 3, and played San Clemente to a one goal game at their pool. They spanked Beckman today.
Thinks the CIF Southern Section should get kudos for having so many divisions; otherwise, there wouldn't be much interest in the postseason, what with the top Division I teams being soooooo dominant in this sport. As it is, you don't have to be a top 10 team in the county to win a division championship -- and, depending on how you look at that, it's either a good thing or bad.
