Welcome to another edition of my final thoughts on Week 7.
Beware of the Diablos: When Mission Viejo hits the field in its black uniforms, you might as well run for cover. I don’t think there is a faster team in the county. Defensively, they were everywhere, flying around the ball, hitting and knocking down Tesoro receivers and backs. Offensively, Exavier Edwards has jets. Jake Marshall = fast. Joey Branker has amazing speed. If the offensive line continues to play as it has and Dallin McEwen plays as he did Friday, then the Diablos could be destined for a run in the Pac-5 playoffs.
Great fan support: McEwen was quick to credit the support of the student section for Friday’s game and deservedly so. All of the students were dressed in black, coinciding with the Diablos wearing their black uniforms, and there were loud from the moment the teams walked out onto the field for warm-ups. Good job Mission Viejo student section.
My day in Mission Viejo: Sometimes we have to fight for a seat in the press box, especially with the emergence of all of the internet broadcasts and podcasts that have started this season. So, with that in mind and knowing that Friday’s Mission Viejo-Tesoro game was being televised, I arrived at Mission Viejo at 4:45 p.m. for a 7:30 kickoff. I know you’re saying that’s crazy, but at least I had a seat, so I’m counting this as a victory.
More Mission Viejo-Tesoro: This was my first time covering this game and I could feel the heat. This is a heated rivalry, very heated.
Mater Dei on the mind: The Monarchs have to be the clubhouse leader when it comes to close and heartbreaking losses. They’re now 0-2 in the Trinity League. I voted them eighth in last week’s top 10. At some point, they’re to have to find a way to pull out these close games. Will it be this year? Or next? Will they even make the playoffs?
Checking in on the Sunset League: There could be danger on the horizon. Next week, Edison faces Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley faces Newport Harbor. We could have four teams tied for first. Stay tuned.
Your weekly Sunset League standings:
Davion Orphey getting touches: Last week, I wrote that Edison needed to get the ball more to Davion Orphey. Friday night, Orphey had six receptions for 109 yards against Newport Harbor. Allow me to take credit for this.
And now, time for your weekly Leuzinger High update:
This week: Leuzinger 28, Peninsula 0.
Next week: at Redondo. Both teams are 2-0 in the Bay League.

” Mater Dei on the mind… next year”
As i said before, regarding M.D., Do we rank them based on their
enormous potential for next year, or how they are playing now?
All talented, but inexperinced teams play with inconsistency. The
nature of the beast.
