Girls volleyball: Thursday’s recap

girls_volleyball_blog6With the second half of the league schedule getting underway, here is a glance at some of Thursday’s action.


In the Sunset League:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 0: The visiting Sailors (19-3, 6-0) continued their mastery of the Sunset League with a three set win over the Barons 25-14, 25-15, 26-24, behind 11 kills from Kirby Burnham and 32 assists from Cinnamon Asry.

No. 2 Los Alamitos 3, No. 10 Edison 0: With Christina Harris leading the way with nine kills, the second place Griffins (22-7, 5-1) stayed a game behind Newport Harbor with a home sweep of the Chargers 25-23, 27-25, 27-25.

Esperanza 3, Marina 0: Caitlin Boring had a team-high 11 kills, while Dana Holt added 34 assists, as the Aztecs (16-8, 3-3) improved to .500 in league with a sweep of the Vikings at Marina High 25-21, 25-18, 25-18. Sydney Barron had a team-best 16 digs for Esperanza, while Megan Lancaster chipped in with 15 digs.

 

In the Century League:

No. 3 El Dorado 3, El Modena 0: The Golden Hawks (16-6, 6-0) won their sixth straight league contest with a 25-8, 25-6, 25-12 road triumph over the Vanguards.  Tara Brooks and Elizabeth Cate each had eight kills for El Dorado, while Gracee Gallarda dished out 26 assists.

 

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 5 Corona del Mar 3, Laguna Hills 0: Hailey Senske had 11 kills, and Claire Ham added 10 to push the first place Sea Kings past the Hawks 25-19, 25-16, 25-5 at Laguna Hills High. Madison Smith added 35 assists, while Morgan Boukather produced five aces for Corona del Mar.

In the Trinity League:

No. 6 Orange Lutheran 3, JSerra 0: The host Lancers (20-6, 4-2) made it four wins in six league contests with a 25-9, 25-15, 25-19 sweep of the Lions (9-12, 0-6).

 

In the Freeway League:

No. 7 Troy 3, Fullerton 0: Juliana Crum had a team-high 14 kills, as the Warriors (19-3, 6-0) defeated the Indians 25-10, 25-10, 25-16 at Fullerton High.

 

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 8 Laguna Beach 3, Godinez 0: Eight Breakers recorded kills, while Allison Palmer added 18 assists, as the Breakers limited the Grizzlies to 14 total points, winning in three 25-3, 25-6, 25-5 at Laguna Beach High.

 

In the Sea View League:

No. 9 Huntington Beach 3, Foothill 0: Taylor Packer had team highs in aces (7) and assists (29), as the Oilers (11-9, 5-1) swept the Knights 25-12, 25-12, 25-9 at Huntington Beach High. Kellie Turner led Huntington Beach with 12 kills.

 

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 3, Los Amigos 2: The Cavaliers (3-11, 1-4) held off a late Lobos rally to win in five sets 17-25, 25-19, 25-11, 21-25, 15-13 at Santiago High.

Bolsa Grande 3, La Quinta 2: In a back and forth match, the Matadors (9-3, 5-1) edged the Aztecs (6-5, 3-3) 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-7 at Bolsa Grande High.

 

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 3, Dana Hills 1: The Tritons (13-8, 6-0) continued their undefeated league play with a four set win over the Dolphins (7-10, 2-4). Alexa Strange led San Clemente with 19 kills, while Chelsea Heier had team highs in assists (49), digs (15), and aces (6).

Mission Viejo 3, Tesoro 0: Sophie Rowe and Danielle White had nine kills apiece to highlight the Diablos 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 win over the Titans at Mission Viejo High. Kyra Goodman added 34 assists, while Bree Knox produced five digs for Mission Viejo.
