Calhoun’s Games to Watch: San Clemente vs. Dana Hills

October 20th, 2009, 7:12 pm · · posted by

football_blog4Best games on the Week 7 schedule:

No. 11 San Clemente (4-2, 1-0) vs. No. 5 Dana Hills (5-1, 1-0)
Friday at Dana Hills High, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Servite has its winless streak against Mater Dei, and Dana Hills has its own winless streak against San Clemente. The Dolphins haven’t defeated the Tritons since 1992, and they’re winless in their previous 17 meetings.

Is this the week it ends?

The Tritons led by 23 points in the second quarter in last week’s game against Aliso Niguel and held on for a 31-25 victory. The Dolphins opened South Coast League play with a 37-34 victory over Tesoro. So, there could be a lot of points put on the board in this game.

San Clemente quarterback Chase Rettig has completed 66.1 percent of his passes (76 for 115) for 847 yards. He has passed for eight touchdowns, but also has thrown six interceptions.

David Espino (841 total yards) is having a good start for the Tritons.

The Dana Hills offense has proven to be difficult to stop for the opposition. Aside from the Edison game, the Dolphins have scored at least 34 points in five of their six games. They are averaging 36.6 points a game.

Josh Dean has been spectacular so far this season. He has completed 62.7 percent of his passes (79 for 126) for 1,020 yards, 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He has three receivers (Chris Kearney, Tanner Crowley and Zach Alario) with more than 300 yards. The Dolphins also have five players with at least 150 rushing yards.

This might be the second most balanced offense in the county, aside from Edison.

Will the Tritons be able to slow them down?

No the tritons wont be able to slow them down but im not so sure about dana’s secondary so I wouldnt be surprised if Rettig put up some big numbers.

  • diablo says:

High scoring game. Dana 35 San Clemente 34.

  • jimbo says:

    dana 34 san clamente 14

  • uhwarrior says:

Chase Rettig will need big numbers to beat Dana this week. But he has the receiving corps to do it. If Chase can get into a grove early SC’s passing attack can be lethal. The Dolphins may have trouble keeping up with the Tritons Wide-outs. Espino needs to step-up and play big to open up Rettig’s air assault.

The Dolphins are playing at home and home field advantage can be big in games like this, especially with Dana being winless all these years against the Tritons. However, the Tritons need this one more than the Dolphins.

    SC 35 – DH 28

    • smashmouth says:

Tritons need this more than the Dolphins???? Um, sorry. This beat down and payback has been 17 years in the making. Dana 45 – 14.

  • bighsfootballfan says:

Is Dana Hills for real??? and can SC do it on the road?? dont think they can because Dana is for real and at home gonna be crazed fans making some noise for the surprise of the year Dana Hills football team, Dana pretty easy in this one 31-17

  • zzzzz says:

Dana is a team that won’t be stopped.. As much as the Tritons talk, Dana back its up with their play. SC is all show and no go!

    Dana 42 SC 14

  • whatshisname says:

danas one loss wasnt even close.and tritons have to be playing with abig chip on their shoulder ,which is usually a big tangible in football. alot of pride at stake in this one and rettig will prove his worth in this one. scle 28 dana14.

    • 2002tony says:

then you didnt see the game, your just looking at the score. If Dana does not fumble on the 2 yd line going in for the score, and does score, that game would have been tied at 24 and a big momentum change. Edison never stopped Dana from moving the ball up and down the field, not like they stopped Servite, turnovers and some untimely flags killed their drives.

      • I read a lot of comments from the Edison-Dana Hills game. I covered that game. It was an exceptional first-half performance from the Dolphins. Dana Hills was shut out in the second half. Gave up a school record in passing yards for Edison, and Edison totally stopped Dana Hills from moving the ball in the second half, after the opening fumble by the Dolphins in the second half. The Chargers were playing without their best player Jordan Zumwalt, who is the emotional spark plug of the team, and Edison had Servite on their minds the following week. Again, great first-half play from Dana Hills, but Edison dominated, dominated, the second half. And to somehow think the Dolphins played a great “game” when they allowed 457 passing yards is a bit out there.
With all that said, the biggest key for Dana Hills against San Clemente is avoiding the notorious big mistake that has plagued the Dolphins recently in this series. If so, I don’t see how the Tritons defense is going to slow Dana Hills enough. I like Dana Hills is a wild shootout.

        • anonymous says:

I remember a pretty bad ref call in the second half in favor of Edison. But the game was a good learning tool for Dana and helped them to bounce back and take the Newport Harbor game 41-7. When you get them angry enough they fight back even harder. San Clemente is going down on Friday.

  • Dana needs to say focused says:

Dana Hills has the ability to win…..but, San Clemente needs this win to let people know that they are still contenders. SC barely beat Aliso and this loss was a wake up call for SC. Believe me, this is not going to be a walk in the park for Dana Hills. I know SC will put everything on the table to win this game. It is also a Home Coming game, so both teams want this won very badly. Dana Hills to be San Clemente on Home Coming first time in something like 17 years and San Clemente would love to continue the winning streak and put Dana Hills back in their place, especially on Dana’s Home Coming. Its a big game and Dana should win if they stay focused. Cant wait till kick off!

  • Dana needs to say focused says:

Correction – SC beat Aliso -

  • Wow says:

After looking at the Aliso score, there is no doubt that Dana wins this one big. Dana is the better team!

Dana and Mission for a league championship Week 10

Tesoro and SC fighting to backdoor into the playoffs

  • SCCMAN says:

The Tritons don’t have the depth to beat Dana Hills. If you recap the last three games against Sante Fe, and La Habra, Aliso. The longer the game stays close, the less of achance the Tritons can win. Like I said… once before! ……..The players last year had a deep bench, and alot of experience. SC, will have to rely on Espino, the last time I looked Football is a team sport.

    Dana Hills =Victory

  • 1000steps says:

    Dana 38 SC 20

Big Homecoming Win for Dolphins. This alumni will be there to see it.

  • theiman says:

Rettig has career game passing against the Swiss Cheese secondary and no pass rush of DH.
    Espino is the real deal.

Sorry for DH they picked this game for their Homecoming game. They should of picked AN or CV, or better yet vs El Mo.

Dana and the Chicago Cubs will always “Wait Until Next Year”

    • 2002tony says:

if Rettig does not have a career game, then Espino will not be able to show he is the real deal and if SC plays like it did last week, then SC will find that Dana “Swiss Cheese” D was just a big mouse trap ready to catch them in.

    • whatshisname says:

whats up thieman, thought you were just a girls basketball guy. whats your take on up coming season

  • SCLfan says:

    haha no pass rush..

  • SCCMAN says:

    San Clemente,

Does not have the team to beat Dana this year. Sure hate to be on this TEAM this year! IF Dana Hills wins! No Play=offs, and the team that LOST to Dana Hills, after 17 Years!

DOLPHINS, swiming with the BIG BOYS NOW!!!

  • jokes on you says:

No pass rush? Go ask Brent Mason, Tesoro’s Qb, how he feels.

  • Missing says:

How does SC not make the playoffs if they lose to Dana?

    • anonymous says:

If Dana wins against San Clemente, SC will need to beat Mission and Tesoro and Capo to go to playoffs.

It’s not over til it’s over.

  • SCCMAN says:

    anonymous,

the last time i looked! it was 1999 since SC beat Mission. The only way you can get in is by beating Tesoro. AND….I dont see that happening!
Not this year! ITS OVER! WOW…. it’s only the second game of league, and the TRITONS are fighting to stay a live…. for a Play-off Berth!

  • doublede says:

    SCCMAN and zzzzzzzz…..
let’s compare DH’s vs Mission and SC vs Mission just the last four years. Big Josh scores at MV and they call a fumble in the endzone SC lose’s by 5 next year at home sc holds mv to 7 we score with no time on the clock and go for two and lose by 1 next year sc vs mv 31 to 31 tie in a game where the winning touchdown was actually on the ground. Last year fantastic comeback dropped pass on the goal line for the winning score sc lose’s by five. thats eleven points seperating mv from sc….dare to compare dh score in the last four years versus mv. please dana is very good and well coached no doubt. let’s see how it plays out!
