No. 13 Tesoro (3-3, 0-1) vs. No. 2 Mission Viejo (6-0, 1-0)
Friday at Mission Viejo High, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Titans are the two-time defending South Coast League champions and has won the previous two meetings between the teams, 28-24 (2007) and 31-14 (2008). Mission Viejo had won the previous seven league titles before the Titans ended their streak in 2007.

Is this the night, the Diablos get their revenge?

If it is, then the Mission Viejo defense will certainly play a role. The Diablos are allowing 7.5 points a game. They have recorded two shutouts this season.

Offensively, the Diablos struggled passing the ball last week against Capistrano Valley, but had success on the ground. Jake Marshall (131 yards) and Dallas Kessman (83) helped lead the Diablos to a 23-0 victory.

Quarterbacks Dallin McEwen and Alex Bridgford combined to pass for 98 yards and Bridgford had two passes intercepted.

The Titans will be looking to avoid a 0-2 start in league.

The Titans’ rushing attack managed just 90 yards on 37 carries (2.7 avg.) against Dana Hills last week. Brett Mason completed 22 of 38 passes for 246 yards against the Dolphins.

This will be third game for the Titans against ranked opponents. They have lost to Fountain Valley (35-14) and Dana Hills (37-34).

Will the third time be the charm? Or will the Diablos’ defense be too much for them to deal with?

Considering that Bridgford is a sophomore, he did well last week. I don’t think Tesoro should underestimate Mission’s power based on the Capo score.

  • diablo says:

Bridgford struggled. He won’t be counted on this week. Mission has several guys that are hurt, but I believe all will try and play come Friday night. One of the best rivalries in OC and its only 4 years old.

As a team this year Mission Viejo has been overwhelming. They pounded some excellent inland empire teams in Corona and Vista Murrieta. Those two teams have a long history of league championships and going deep in the CIF playoffs. MV made them look like second rate beginning programs. Tesoro is a shadow of it’s former self. MV has home field advantage.

    MV 42 – Tesoro 21

It is always tough when you lose your starting RB and QB to injury in a game, and also have a banged up front line. I dont know if those players will make it back this week, which will put a whole different look to the MV offensive attack. Before last weeks injury’s, I would have said 42 is very reasonable to obtain based on how we have played so far, but now I am not as sure.

Tesoro is not that good, oh they look good in spurts but really folks they will be outplayed again on the road and a tough place to win MV….Injury bug hit MV but not enough to diminish thereir chances of a rout MV 28 T 7

  • HSFootballRules says:

Curious where all of the boastful and cocky Tesoro fans are this year? Or do y’all only support your team when they are good? MV will crush Tesoro…It will be interesting to see of Coach Barnes thinks he can outcoach MV this year (that is what he said was the cause of last year’s victory over MV). Not quite the same coach without all that talent this year are we coach?

  • MV penitration says:

Mission will be ready on friday and all of the diablos will be healthy i no some guy got banged up last friday but they are healing up fast this week they will look crisp. tesoro has a big challenge this week i dont think they will be blitzing as much as last year. and last week they looked kinda rusty till the 3rd quarter so we are up for a big one and i dont think tesoro can stop the mission defense will iron man nike marini and man beast stamos and with pretty boy zach hoffman they are playing like a unit thats all i got to say—— MV 35 T 14

  • anonymous says:

too bad it won’t be game of the week

  • diablo says:

2002Tony brings up a good point. Injuries on the O line will hurt, but I heard that they will all suit up and be ready to play. If they are healthy enough to go I could see MV in a rout, if not Tesoro should be able to stay close.
