Girls volleyball: Tuesday’s roundup

girls_volleyball_blog6It was a terrific night of volleyball around the county, with league races being effected everywhere.

There were none bigger than the Sunset League showdown, No. 1 Los Alamitos at No. 2 Newport Harbor. Click here for the recap and analysis of that match.

As for the rest, here it is:

No. 10 Edison 3, Esperanza 2: Cassie Strickland’s team-high 19 kills helped the Chargers overcome the Aztecs in five, 25-22, 14-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-13 in a key Sunset League match. Edison is now 2-1; Esperanza 1-2.

No. 3 El Dorado 3, Villa Park 0: The Golden Hawks received 25 assists from Gracee Gallarda and 18 kills from Andrea McHugh in their sweep over the Spartans, 25-8, 25-12, 25-6, in Century League action.

No. 4 Santa Margarita 3, Mater Dei 0: The Eagles (3-0) remained undefeated in Trinity League play with a sweep over the Monarchs, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18. Mater Dei is 2-2.

No. 5 Orange Lutheran 3, Rosary 0: The Lancers (3-0) set up a showdown for first place with Santa Margarita on Thursday after sweeping the Royals, 25-19, 25-13, 27-25 in Tuesday’s Trinity League match.

No. 8 Huntington Beach 3, Northwood 1: The Oilers pulled out the final two games to beat the Timberwolves, 25-14, 23-25, 25-11, 25-13, in Sea View League play. The Oilers are now 3-0. Northwood is 1-2. Taylor Packer finished with 37 assists and 11 digs for Huntington. Katrina Doherty led Northwood with 13 kills.

San Clemente 3, Mission Viejo 0: The Tritons have yet to drop a game in three South Coast matches after sweeping Mission Viejo, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20, and taking sole possession of first place. Chelsea Heier ended with 45 assists and Danielle Van Liefde had 13 kills and 11 digs for San Clemente.

El Toro 3, Woodbridge 1: The Chargers improved to 2-1 in the Sea View League standings after defeating the Warriors, 16-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-13 at El Toro High. Christina Bauch led the way with 15 kills for El Toro. Melanie Wilhelm added 14 and Kacie Benson 10.

Beckman 3, Laguna Hills 1: Laurie Goodman posted 26 assists to lead the Patriots past the Hawks in four, 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, in Pacific Coast League action. Beckman is 3-0.

Tustin 3, El Modena 0: Karlee Riggs ended with 14 kills and 10 digs in the Tillers’ sweep against the Vanguards, 27-25, 25-12, 25-17, in Century League play. Kaitlynn Biard added 19 assists and 8 digs.

Valencia 3, Kennedy 1: Casey Hinger and Hannah Swaney combined for 37 kills to carry the Tigers to a road victory over the Fighting Irish, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, in Empire League play. Valencia is 2-1. Kennedy is 1-2.

Los Amigos 3, Rancho Alamitos 2: The Lobos were led by Michelle Do’s 12 kills and Aileen Capelle’s 12 digs to escape in five games over Rancho Alamitos, 25-15, 15-25, 25-18, 18-25, 15-6, in Garden Grove League play. Los Amigos is 2-1. Rancho Alamitos 1-2.
