Calhoun’s Games to Watch: Dana Hills vs. Tesoro

football_blog3The top games on the Week 6 schedule:

No. 7 Dana Hills (4-1) vs. No. 12 Tesoro (3-2)
Friday, at Tesoro High, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The race to fill the South Coast League playoff spots looks to be an interesting one.

If Mission Viejo is indeed the stone-cold favorite, then you have the Dolphins, Titans and San Clemente fighting for the other two playoff spots.

Remember, the Titans are the two-time defending league champion, so they’re not going to down without a fight.

The Dolphins have played their way in the county’s top 10 after an impressive start with victories over Top 20 teams Santa Margarita, El Toro and Santa Margarita.

They led Edison at halftime and closed the nonleague season with a 57-0 victory over El Modena.

Now, can they carry over that momentum into league?

Quarterback Josh Dean has completed 67 of 101 passes (66.3 percent) for 814 yards, nine touchdowns and just two interceptions.

There is balance in the ground game, led Brandon Howe’s 326 yards and three receivers with at 230 receiving yards.

Tesoro started 0-2, but has found their identity recently, winning three consecutive games.

Quarterback Brett Mason has completed 63.6 percent of his passes during the winning streak.

Can he continue this level of play against the Dolphins’ defense?

Its seems Tesoro is an afterthought in most HS football fans minds these days. Look for the Titans to show up big and reassert themselves as a South Coast league contender. Much respect for how the Dolphins have represented themselves in the pre-season. Dana is a solid football club. I just have to think that young Mr. Barnes will have his underdog defending SC league champs pumped and ready to go.
