What happened: No. 10 Tesoro captured five of the six second-round sets to pull away from and defeat Capistrano Valley, 11-7, in South Coast League girls tennis action Tuesday at Tesoro High.
Records: Tesoro 6-3, 2-1; Capo Valley 3-3, 1-2
Impact: There’s a three-way fight for the No. 2 and 3 spots in the South Coast League with Tesoro, Capistrano Valley and San Clemente. SC beat Tesoro, 11-7, last week, so the Titans didn’t want to fall behind in the race early, and got a big win. The Cougars will have a shot at the Titans in the next portion of league, but could create quite a race by beating San Clemente when they meet.
Match of the day: Titans No. 3 Kathlyn Kordestani vs. Cougars No. 2 Ashley Ta. Kordestani upset Ta, 7-6, to finish off Round 2 and give Tesoro an 8-4 advantage.
“To be 8-4 instead of 7-5 is a different thing,” Titans coach Tim DiLeo said. “Kathlyn was pivotal. That was our biggest match.”
Sweeps: Titans No. 1 singles Mayci Jones and No. 2 doubles Tammy Taylor and Ariel Aung.
