Five teams in last week’s top 10 will take their bye week next week. My bye week doesn’t come until June.
Welcome to another edition of my final thoughts.
Maybe we all should just listen to Albano: My main man Dan Albano was the lone voter who voted Dana Hills in his top 10 poll last week. The Dolphins backed up Albano with a 41-7 victory over Newport Harbor, who was ranked 10th heading into week 4. The Dolphins will likely move into this week’s top 10. I’m going to start listening to Albano.
What does this say about the South Coast League: I think it is safe to say that Mission Viejo is big dog in the league, but how will the San Clemente, Dana Hills, Tesoro trio be separated?
Mater Dei is still top 10 worthy: The Monarchs will remain in my top 10 next week. They led No. 1 Edison, 26-14 in the third quarter, but couldn’t find a way to hold on. The Monarchs had the ball inside the Edison 15 at least three times, but had to settle for field goals. The Chargers are just too good to give them that many chances and they finally took advantage.
The leader in the clubhouse: As of right now, Matt Viles is my pick as the first team all-county quarterback. I’m not even debating this right now … unless Albano wants to.
His name is Victor Blackwell and you can’t catch him: Coach Bruce Rollinson said that Blackwell still isn’t 100 percent because of an ankle injury, but it didn’t look like it Thursday night. He has the big-play ability that the MD offense needs. He should be 100 percent healthy coming off of the bye week.
Class move of the year: Props to Kyle Middlebrooks. He was 11 yards short of breaking Fountain Valley’s single-game rushing record, coach John Shipp asked him if he wanted to back in and break the record, but instead of going back in the game in a blowout, he said no.
My apologies to Los Alamitos: Last week, I questioned how good Los Alamitos was. I guess they showed me. Then again, if I had listened to Albano, everything would have been fine.
Southwest Division thoughts: Don’t forget about El Dorado. The Golden Hawks showed me a lot of fight, even in defeat to Tesoro.
You make the call: Sunset? South Coast? Trinity?
That’s it for this week, see you at a stadium near you.

Having covered high school sports for almost 30 years, the decision by Middlebrooks is one of the most mature decisions I’ve ever heard of coming from a high school athlete (and it ranks pretty highly compared to adults, too). He should be all-county based on that alone (although it helps that he’s got the talent to back it up).
Dophins are a water mammal. Given that Albano is the coutny watersports expert, it’s understandable that he had extraordinary insight into Dana Hills. I would suspect he has similar insight into the Breakers, Tritons, Sea Kings, Seahawks, Vikings and Sailors.
For having 30 years in highschool sports you should know that whatever the school mascot is has nothing to do with the performance of any team
OC student …AHHAHHAHA that was a joke. Hello
