Girls volleyball: Thursday’s recap

girls_volleyball_blog6With several of the county’s top 10 teams in action, here is a look at some of Thursday’s match results.

No. 1 Los Alamitos 3, University 0: The Griffins (17-4) recorded the home sweep over the Trojans 25-10, 26-24, 25-16 behind nine kills from Christina Harris and seven kills from Annishia McKoy.

No. 2 Corona del Mar 3, Mater Dei 0: Hailey Senske had a team-high 14 kills, while Maddie Smith dished out 34 assists, as the Sea Kings swept the Monarchs 25-20, 25-20, 26-24 at Corona del Mar High. Sydney Brombal had 11 digs, while Morgan Boukather added three blocks.

No. 3 Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 1: The Sailors (12-3) got 22 kills and 17 digs from Kirby Burnham, along with 19 digs from Kelly Heenan to beat the Breakers 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14 at Newport Harbor High.

No. 4 El Dorado 3, No. 8 Edison: Tara Brooks had 13 kills, and Gracee Gallarda had 32 assists, as the Golden Hawks (11-6) swept the host Chargers 25-13, 25-19, 25-16.

No. 5 Santa Margarita 3, JSerra 0: Nicole Jeschelnik had a team best eight kills, while Haley Thayer added 12 assists, as the Eagles (12-8, 1-0) opened Trinity league play with a home sweep of the Lions (7-5, 0-1) 25-18, 25-12, 25-15.

No. 9 Esperanza 3, Brea Olinda 0: Chelsee Arnitz had 14 kills, while Anna Dickey added 10 kills to propel the Aztecs (12-4) past the Wildcats (5-4) 25-23, 26-24, 26-24 at Esperanza High. Dana Holt had 31 assists for the Aztecs.

No. 10 Huntington Beach 3, Ocean View 0: Ally Torline had seven kills and three blocks to lead the Oilers (6-5) past the Seahawks (4-4) 25-7, 25-21, 25-16 at Ocean View High.

Fountain Valley 3, Laguna Hills 2: The Barons dropped the first set, before rallying to knock off the Hawks 14-25, 25-17, 25-14, 23-25, 16-14 at Laguna Hills High.

Estancia 3, Irvine 1: Lily McLendon’s team-high 16 kills pushed the Eagles (9-9) over the Vaqueros 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23 at Estancia High.
