Outlook: Is it going to be a two-team (Santa Margarita and Orange Lutheran) boxing match for first place once more, or can another team (Mater Dei) join the fray? Santa Margarita and Lutheran split two meetings last season in rather contrasting manners (Eagles swept, and then lost in four). The teams ended tied for first place. The Lancers fell in the quarterfinals to Mira Costa. The Eagles eventually beat Costa in a classic five-game dual in the championship. Orange Lutheran lost Lauren Corp, but returns a junior trio in Courtney Castle, Shaq Torres and setter Hannah Tedrow that is only improving. Speaking of improving, Santa Margarita is seeing big results from Samantha Tinsley to start the season. She should be a boost along side of Kylie Hargreaves. Mater Dei has plenty of youth, but seniors Kay Lin Connolly, Emily Doll and Sarah Mull should help the Monarchs hold off Rosary for third place. The Royals will be hurt by the departures of Nicole Favreau and Chanel Araujo. However, Rosary returns Elizabeth Krieger and Justine Ricigliano, who finished 2-3 in kills last season, plus setter Katie Muller.
Prediction:
1. Santa Margarita
2. Orange Lutheran
3. Mater Dei
4. Rosary
5. JSerra
