Girls volleyball: South Coast League preview

Outlook: Last year it was a four-team fight for three playoff berths. That doesn’t appear to be the case this season. San Clemente and Capistrano Valley shared the league championship last season. Dana Hills beat Mission Viejo out for third place. The Dolphins have struggled to begin the season, and the expected return of the Diablos’ reliable outside hitter Kaela Goodman gives Mission Viejo the nod this year. But who will win the league title? Goodman’s presence gives the Diablos as good as chance as the defending champions. San Clemente lost more off its roster from last year than did Capo Valley. The Cougars return the league’s best middle in Alma Serna, and have the best middle depth of the league. The Tritons have one of the league’s rising stars in sophomore opposite Alexa Strange, and a solid outside in junior Molly Yoder.  The determining factor may be which team receives the most consistent passing from its setter.

Prediction:

1. Capistrano Valley

2. San Clemente

3. Mission Viejo

4. Tesoro

5. Dana Hills

6. Aliso Niguel
