In the latest CIF-SS Division I coaches’ poll, Dana Hills was voted No. 1, Campbell Hall No. 2.
The teams met Wednesday at Valley College in Van Nuys for a possible championship match preview.
The Dolphins emerged with a 10-8 victory over Campbell Hall, affirming their selection as the top team. Dana Hills is the two-time defending Division I champion, but lost its top two singles players from last year.
No matter.
Freshman Alyssa Smith was the star of the show Wednesday. She swept, including a momentum-changing victory over Sabrina Santamaria in a first-round tiebreaker.
Older sister Joanna, a junior, won two of three sets. She lost to Sarah Lee.
Lee is ranked No. 8 and Santamaria No. 11 in the USTA So Cal girls 18 and under seedings. Joanna is No. 18. Alyssa is No. 12 in the 16′s and under.
“I was using it as a test run to see how we would do,” Dolphins coach Mark Spearman said. “We played really well.”
