South Coast League
Outlook: The two-time Division I defending champion Dana Hills is the unchallenged queen of the league. The Dolphins have won 18 consecutive league titles and 19 is in the works. The interest is with three teams behind them – San Clemente, Capistrano Valley and Tesoro. All three can’t make the playoffs, so one of those teams is staying home. Who will it be? A season ago, the Tritons edged the Cougars for second place as the Titans were left out. All three teams have above average singles players. So the doubles are going to be especially important in determining the outcome. Expect the race to be tighter this year, but a similar result to take place.
2008 singles champion: Joanna Smith (Dana Hills)
Factoid: Dana Hills has sisters Joanna (Jr) and Alyssa Smith (Fr) playing 1-2 singles. Joanna reached the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS individual tournament last year.
Prediction (with last year’s playoff result):
1. Dana Hills (won CIF-SS Division I final)
2. San Clemente (lost to Campbell Hall second round)
3. Tesoro (n/a)
4. Capistrano Valley (lost to Woodbridge first round)
5. Aliso Niguel (n/a)
6. Mission Viejo (n/a)
