Pacific Coast League
Outlook: The league features the county’s No. 2 (CdM) and No. 3 (University) teams. However, it’s been the Sea Kings league for some time, and they won’t let go of it this year. CdM carries a loaded singles line up (Melissa Matsuoka, Hailey Hogan and Katelyn Nguyen), and has a long reputation for its doubles play. The Trojans have an influx of young talent that makes the future meetings between Uni and CdM intriguing, but for this year, Trojans will settle for second place. The real competition in this league is for the third and final playoff spot. Beckman has the returning singles champion, Megan Heneghan, but does it have enough depth to advance? Laguna Hills and Irvine will be right there too. The Hawks have Jocelyn Lu at No. 1 singles. She finished in third place last year behind Heneghan and Matsuoka.
2008 singles champion: Megan Heneghan (Beckman)
Factoid: Corona del Mar has played in three consecutive Division I finals, winning the championship in 2006 by defeating Troy, 12-6.
Prediction (with last year’s playoff result):
1. Corona del Mar (lost to Dana Hills in CIF-SS Division I final)
2. University (lost in quarterfinals to Palos Verdes)
3. Laguna Hills (lost to Santa Margarita first round)
4. Beckman (n/a)
5. Irvine (n/a)
