Taking a look at the top games on this week’s football schedule:
No. 19 El Toro (3-1) vs. No. 9 San Clemente (2-1)
Friday, 7 p.m., at San Clemente High
Outlook: What happened to the Tritons last week?
San Clemente committed five turnovers, including three interceptions by quarterback Chase Rettig, in a 34-20 loss to Santa Fe of Santa Fe Springs. Santa Fe is now ranked ninth in the Southeast Division.
The Tritons are still in the county’s top 10, albeit barely (ninth). Can they get things back on the right track?
David Espino has 253 total yards on 34 touches.
This is not the same El Toro team that San Clemente defeated last year, 28-3. That team finished 2-8; these Chargers are 3-1.
El Toro, under first-year coach Robert Frith, responded after a loss to Dana Hills with two blowout victories. The Chargers defeated Capistrano Valley, 30-3, and Laguna Hills, 24-0.
Defense has been the key for the Chargers. They forced six turnovers against Laguna Hills, which was crucial since the offense only gained 140 yards.
The Chargers are 2-1 against the South Coast League. Can they make it to 3-1?

No. 7 Mater Dei vs. No. 1 Edison
No. 4 Los Alamitos vs. No. 8 La Habra
No. 10 Newport Harbor vs. No. 15 Dana Hills
No. 17 El Dorado vs. No. 12 Tesoro
No. 6 Orange Lutheran vs. Narbonne of Harbor City
BONUS GAME: No. 3 Servite vs. Chaparral of Temecula
Damian your so correct. At least in this “knowsnothing’s” point of view. Can the Triton’s get things back on the right track? The Chargers are 2-1 against the South Coast League. Can they make it to 3-1? Isn’t it exciting if your a Charger fan or Triton fan? This is what high school CIF Southern Section provides, as you well stated, “some weeks the schedule is fully loaded, and this is one of those weeks”. No. 7 Mater Dei vs. No. 1 Edison; No. 4 Los Alamitos vs. No. 8 La Habra; No. 10 Newport Harbor vs. No. 15 Dana Hills; No. 17 El Dorado vs. No. 12 Tesoro; No. 6 Orange Lutheran vs. Narbonne of Harbor City; with a bonus game : No. 3 Servite vs. Chaparral of Temecula. Man it doesn’t get any better except, “some weeks”.
As far as the Triton vs. Charger’s at San Clemente High’s Thalassa Stadium, San Clemente this coming October 2nd, Friday night. Eric Patton made a absolutely rare criticism of his varsity football program. “It was a debacle,” San Clemente coach Eric Patton said. “We just self-destructed. It was one of the more embarrassing games I have been associated with.” This statement made by Coach Patton has been thrusted into the Triton varsity football team since the “debacle”, that the echo bounced from offensive and defensive coordinators to position coach to position coach to player to player. Coach Patton’s lower level programs both provided him with 30 plus point victories the afternoon before. Notice Coach Patton’s varsity has four sophomore’s starting and several as players with quite a bit of playing time.
I would venture to say, San Clemente will be the team with a point to prove to their head coach, their lower levels, their parents, school, and especially themselves at home, in front of their home crowd Ensure that their worthy of a 9th place spot and 19 votes in the top ten teams catagory for OC and 15th in the CIF-SS COACHES POLL: PAC-5 DIVISION.
If you have followed South Coast league football these past years, then you should have a good idea what wil occur at Thalassa Stadium, San Clemente this coming October 2nd, Friday night.
out
San Clemente will blow them out after their loss to santa Fe, and dont disrespect the Chiefs too much they simply outplayed SC but Sc will show up and show the county they still are a force to be reckoned with.
That Santa Fe team is loaded with talent and earned that win…I was there the turnovers hurt but SC still had a chance to come back and could not. Credit the Chiefs…the QB was a man on a mission! SC will bounce back, it will be a good nite for the Tritons!
San Clemente should handle El Toro with ease like they did against Trabuco Hills. Big game against La Habra the following week. Focus on the Chargers first though.
