Tough, tough week for voting. Lots happened and it didn’t help to sort many things out.
Here’s what I came up with:
1. Edison: In case you missed it a few weeks ago, I had Edison beating Servite. Chargers take over top spot. Is it too late to change the schedule and have Edison and Mission Viejo meet, instead of Mater Dei this week?
2. Mission Viejo: Diablos could very well take the No. 1 spot, but it was difficult not to give it to Edison because they beat the No. 1 team. I have a feeling it’s only a matter of weeks before Mission Viejo will take the top spot, considering how tough the Sunset schedule can be.
3. Servite: Friars need to get ready for Trinity League play and ending a long winless streak. Not many teams are going to be able to do what Edison did to Servite. This is still a very good team.
4. Fountain Valley: When teams lose, it’s hard not to move other teams up. I had the Barons at No. 5 last week, and with Orange Lutheran losing – granted to a strong East Redlands squad – I had to bump FV up a notch.
5. Los Alamitos: Griffins are undefeated. They appear to have a strong football team, but the schedule hasn’t been as strong as other teams. Nonetheless, Los Al will soon have shots to show where it belongs with its upcoming league schedule.
6. Orange Lutheran: Lancers had their game won, but lost on a last-second play. That’s a brutal way to lose.
7. Mater Dei: Monarchs still need to improve by league play. It could be a tough week if MD doesn’t cut its mistakes down against Edison.
8. San Clemente: Tritons come back to the pack after turnover-filled loss to Santa Fe. San Clemente should rebound against El Toro, then it’s a showdown with La Habra.
9. La Habra: If I know Highlanders fans, they definitely think I have La Habra ranked too low. Maybe I do. We’ll see in the next couple weeks where they fall.
10. Newport Harbor: Sailors put on a solid performance in the Battle of the Bay this week. They remain at the No. 10 spot.

I continue to make excuses for Trinity league teams.
I am curious if you base your rankings on this years performance or the reputation of the program? Based on what the teams have done this season do you think that your 4 through8 picks would beat the teams below them? What is great is at least in the Sunset league we will find out!!
Los Alamitos Griffins
i think tobolski has got it right…However, i think la habra is better than what people might think. They play los al next week? If so, i am very interested in the outcome of that game.
How can you have an undefeated team (Fountain Valley & Los Al)) behind a team that is not undefeated (Servite) in the ranking? What’s next, if Mater Dei or Los Al or Fountain Valley beats Edison, do they go to the #1 spot? This ranking determination is as inconsistent as the BCS ranking process.
Socal , see my reply to Greendog. It will help soothe the pain. Also,
Don’t let Granny Holtz get in your ear. Just remember, If granny had balls, she’d be Grandpa.
SoCalNative,
How can Servite still be ahead of FV and Los Al? easy. They are playing highly ranked teams.
A loss to a top team is not going to outweigh a win to a no-ranking team.
Will the real Mater Dei and San Clemente team please stand up. One week these teams look like the elite team we think they are and the next week they lay an egg. I cant see either of these teams in the top 10 until they have more consistency in play from week to week.
Also, if MD is in the top 10, then where is Esperaza? They beat Jodan 51 -12 and MD barely wins 23-20 on a last min field goal. If you are to compare loses, Then Tustins loss (without their best RB playing) to OL is not as bad as San Clemente (with their best players playing) loss to Santa Fe.
Tony, controversy increases ratings. If the teams were ranked correctly
nobody would be up in arms over the whole mess, therefore, no ratings,
no advertising sold- kapish. In the absence of ratings concerns, nobody in their right mind would assemble a top ten that looked like this.
Controversy? I think rankings increases debate.
Tony, please be sitting and take your blood pressure medicine
before you get a whiff of Calhouns top ten. He’s got
Mater Dei ranked fourth. M.D. is rumored to have barely beaten L.A. Jordan. On the other hand, Esperanza did things to Jordan that a
ranch hand wouldn’t do to a farm animal, yet I don’t think Esperanza’s ranked. Well, why stop here lets vote Mater Dei into the Pac-10,
then The B.C.S., The N.F.L. , The sky’s the limit.
Tony, actually that was Albano’s Top ten , not Calhoun’s. One thousand
apologies to Calhoun.
My top 10 vote will be in Tuesday’s paper. Make sure everybody takes their blood pressure medicine before reading.
San Clemente in Div.1 loses handily to a Div.7 team and it’s still in the top ten. Wonder who’s running this show?
I had Mater Dei No. 4 last week, too – that Centennial win was big
Jordan is ok – certainly athletic – and Espy played great vs. Jordan. And pulled on out vs. Mira Costa. I still don’t like Esperanza’s poor opener – at least it is still hanging with me
Dan, I wouldn’t let Esperanza’s poor opener get under your skin, Heck
at Mater Dei their whole season’s been a poor opener. How good is
Centennial? What were their results last week? Anyhow, I can understand how the the A-11 ( or at least a poor man’s A-11, I think a bunch of whining coaches had the C.I.F. abolish the real A-11, if so , it’s a real travesty) or any other Contrarian offense (also see Double wing, Single( wildcat) wing) can be a great equalizer. But, M.D.’s showing against Jordan and all of the troublesome teams they have met along the way, still hangs with me. Now I realize the prevailing thought is that Mater Dei’s great coaching staff and system will eventually get the ship going consistently, full steam. But, Orange County is full of excellent coaches with good systems. There is simply
no substitute for experience and if Mater Dei’s problem is lack of experience and not talent, Then say hello to next year.
You got one thing right! Someone in the Sunset will trip up Edison and Mission will be there to take over.
With Jeckyl-and-Hydes San Clemente and Dana their only future challengers, the Diablos will run the table and finish the regular season as the #1 team in OC. Are they good enough to capture CIF, get to the State Bowl game? Not yet, but they very well could be by November…
I also think Mission Viejo’s season is setting up nicely.
I think that Sunset league has a race for 2nd place. Edison didn’t make the playoffs last year on a coin toss. They are pissed off and will destroy that league. Im sorry but Edison is a beast. If they can do what they did to Servite, in league watch out for state.
Keeping it real upset,
Nobody escapes the Sunset undefeated this year. You heard it here
first. There are too many landmines along the way. The battle field
that be the Sunset League will be littered with broken dreams, lost
opportunity and groups of fans left in astonishment over what just
happened. Print this and pin it to the wall. Period the end!
keeping it real your aa joke Fv wins sole possesion of the sunset league titlen and the bell whatch for them in state!
La Habra’s ranked 12th in the state of California and 89th I think in the nation. In the state rankings I believe La Habra is 4th of the Orange County teams ranked. What’s this mean? Somebody’s wrong! But as you say the Los Al game will shed some light. How much light will it shine concerning your Pac 5 bias however?
Re Craig- Newport Harbor is ranked 13th in the state, right behind LA HABRA, and they are 10th in the county. So lighten up on your no respect. LH will get their due if they beat LOS AL. And Tobolski voted San Clemente 8th??? Get a grip- they lost to the 198th ranked team in the state.
The Bell game is going to be a hot item ticket in Nov. They may just need to move it back to Anaheim stadium. That kick-off return by Middlebrooks that got called back last year made them loss the game. They have not forgotten that. Not only do they have a running game but they also have a passing game that they were just developing last year. I can wait, may the best team win.
