While you’re deeply entrenched in USC Starting Quarterback-Gate. Here are my final thoughts on another week of OC high school football.
The reports of Mater Dei’s demise were greatly exaggerated: I was one who voted the Monarchs at No. 7 in my weekly top 10 after their five-point victory over Cypress. I’m not going to say ‘I told you so’ just yet, but ….
The defense has been solid all year, quarterback Max Wittek has turned in two solid performances, Jordan Allen recorded his second consecutive 100-yard game, Victor Blackwell returned and the offensive line, which was considered a concern at the beginning of the season, is off to a good start. The Monarchs are not out of the woods yet, they have to face L.A. Jordan and its wacky offense and Edison to close out the nonleague schedule. Then Trinity League play opens with Orange Lutheran and Servite. Stay tuned.
Chris Nicholls is No. 6 and he needs the rock: I finally had the chance to see the top-ranked Servite Friars in action. There is a lot to like about this team, including senior Chris Nicholls. Nicholls rushed for two touchdowns and had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also had a 78-yard return that set up a score in the first half. He’s a game-changer.
The team has several offensive threats and with quarterback Cody Fajardo running the offense, it makes them difficult to gameplan for. And did you see the Troy Niklas TD catch?
More Servite: I could see Servite ease up off the peddal against Crespi after Nicholls’ 90-yard kickoff return that gave them a 38-7 lead. The subs came in and Crespi went to work, making everybody a little bit uncomfortable on the Servite side of Cerritos College. Coach Troy Thomas admitted that everyone (players and coaches) will learn from that. I’m sure they will.
The Canyon coaching staff deserves a blowout: Three games. Three results decided by three points or fewer. All have come down to the last few plays of the game. And there are still seven games left!
I think that Rettig kid is going to be OK: Chase Rettig made his much-anticipated San Clemente debut Friday night and he only completed 21 of 25 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Sunset League Doomsday Scenario: Last season, my colleague Carlos Arias dubbed the Sunset League five-way tie for the league title “the Doomsday Scenario” and for good measure. Five teams tied, but only three advanced to the playoffs. It it is too early to see anything like that happening this year, but keep an eye on how things progress. Last season’s playoff teams (Edison, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Newport Harbor and Esperanza) are a combined 12-1 so far.
That’s it for this week, see at a stadium near you!

Boy this San Clemente team sure proved me wrong, thought Trabuco would win and without question SC proved that they are one heck of a club.now how good are they certainly better than Trabuco and now i cannot wait to see what La Habra has for them, but SC is the real deal again and may go further than alot of us expect including me , Servite is gonna be very tough to beat and Edison is throwin the ball like crazy so gonna be a fantstic year!!
La Habra has a tough one versus los al first before facing SC
I bet Viles attempts 45 passes
I thought Matt Viles played for Edison, not Los Al.??????
He does play for Edison.
Last year, La Habra lost to SC and Los Al by a touch down each. If the writers at OCV had been really looking at the La Habra/Tustin final game last year and paid a little more attention to “North County Football” during this summer’s passing league, they might realize that this may be the year that LH takes down a division I school. Wilkerson gets all the press, yet many who followed LH football last year would agree that Trabuco Hills and El Dorado were more of a challenge than Tustin. It is about being a team, and that is why a 2400 enrollment school continues to improve each year. They have a great coaching staff who are not looking for personal records, but team victories. I have know doubt that LH’s Josh Quesada could have a 300 + yard game with 43 carries, but he would probably be less effective for the next game…….hmmmm.
I am sooo tired of reading blogs from La Habra fans whining about how they don’t get any respect. During this current round of releaguing La Habra had the chance to move up to the Pac-5 and begged to stay in their current league. When LH has played Pac-5 teams they have lost. Newport has a smaller enrollment then LH yet you don’t hear their fans whining, even after they beat Los Al at Los Al and didn’t get “picked” for the playoffs. Keep winning your southwest or whatever division titles and quit complaining. When you are ready to step up to a Pac-5 league they would be happy to have you, then you can earn respect like all the other programs have had to do!!
Greendog, you sound a little bitter bud. Take a chill pill. It’s highschool football. Let the games play themslves out and root for you favorite team. La Habra has done well with what local talent they get – just like Newport Harbor did on Div. 6 in the 90′s.
Pac-5 and other will never match up, that’s why CIF made several different divisions.
shut up greendog!!! the football staff has nothing to say about releauging.do you think location and economics or school districts had any thing to do about it.the closest pac 5 league is in hb area and espy doesent count since their leaving next year. they have 2 pac5s again this year and so hills is no slouch.Im sure they could sched ule capo, aliso or j serra, when current contracts runnout.of course you could say the same about pac 5 teams scheduling teams out of area that arent that good so they get tuned up,and dont say they dont . powerhouse long beach jordan, mayfair, carson, oceanside ect. the only one that loaded up was servite and who knew saome of teams they payed were reloading or had personel problems. and even then edison will emerge as top pac 5 this weekend.
