Girls tennis: What’s on tap this week

September 15th, 2009, 10:51 am · · posted by

girls_tennis_iconAfter an abbreviated week last week, there is a full slate of matches this week.

It’s a intriguing week for the top 10, which was shaken up in the latest rankings.

Here is what fans can watch for, and feel free to leave your comments.

5. Defending champs in action: Dana Hill has two preseason matches scheduled before South Coast League play begins. A match today against Laguna Beach is one. It’s the Dolphins opening match, and they are sure to be excited to start. It’s a great test for the Breakers, who are currently ranked No. 4 in the county.

4. Newport Harbor at Sage Hill (Tuesday): This a great match for the top 10 rankings. Sage Hill fell out of the top 10 with an opening loss to Santa Margarita last week. The Sailors dropped after falling to Northwood. This match will provide some clarity as to what should happen in next week’s poll.

3. Northwood at University (Tuesday): A showdown of Irvine schools, the Trojans are ranked No. 3 in the county. Northwood made its debut in the top 10 poll this week, coming in at No. 7. It would be asking a lot of the Timberwolves to upset University. However, it’ll be a good litmus test for Northwood.

2. Troy at El Dorado (Tuesday): You sit around and wonder how good teams are, and then next thing you know, they are facing one another. That’s the case in this match. In year’s past, Troy would be the overwhelming favorite. Not so this year. Can El Dorado spring an upset and earn its way into the top 10 discussion?

1. Woodbridge at Sage Hill (Thursday): Busy week for the Lightning, and it won’t be easy either. This should be a tight, hard fought match for both teams that will have a direct impact on the top 10 rankings. The Warriors are ranked No. 6. Is that too high? We’ll find out.
