10. Tustin

(9-5 overall, 4-1 and tie for first place in Century League in 2008)

The Tillers got all the way to the CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division championship last year, and they could be better this year. Tustin brings back All-County running back Anthony Wilkerson, who compares favorably to former Tillers great DeShaun Foster. Also returning are defensive back Wade Minshew, who likely will get some carries in the Tillers’ double-wing offense, too, as will fullback/defensive back star Denzale Stewart. Tustin has solid linemen again, led by all-league returnees Scott Hungerford and Faitele Faafoi. If Tustin starts 1-3 or even 1-4, ignore it. The Tillers do that every year, and then play their best when it counts the most.

I can promise you the Tillers won’t start 1-3 or 1-4!!! Tustin’s strong again this year, and look for Mr. Wilkerson to break a couple records (possibly) of the great DeShaun Foster. But I’m surprised Tustin’s ranked AHEAD of LH in the preseason polls – in the TOP 10 – when they beat Tustin in the title game last year.

  • Highlanderfan says:

I was delighted to see La Habra making it into the 11 slot preseason. I also see the point of the scribes in picking the number 10 team. La Habra defense plowed the Tillers under at Anaheim Stadium last year in the season wrapper. I am basking in the glow of those proud players sporting championship rings. This gives the Highlanders more rungs to climb to hopefully end closer to the top. It will be difficult with the top ten loaded with private religious schools. They recruit from a much larger geographic area. Some of them exist almost exclusively to make money from football to further their liturgical tendencies.

“Some of them exist almost exclusively to make money from football to further their liturgical tendencies.”

      Do you believe that? Really?

You won, rankings don’t matter, this is for entertainment purposes only.

Mr. Fryer do you really think in your heart of hearts that Tustin is better than La Habra??? please if ya do and im asking as a fan of all OC sports and although i disagree with you on occasion i do respect your hard work and am thankful of the great job you do covering the area, so what im asking is time permits explain why, i know probably 9 thru 12 could flip flop but why is Tustin rated ahead of La Habra .any thoughts???

  • Jerri says:

I only have one question???? Fryer, do you even go to the games???
At the finals last season everyone watched as La Habra went toe to toe with Tustin. It was an awesome display of (unrecruited) high school football. At the concessions stands, in the restroom, in the parking lot many comments were made by people from different high schools; all of them said La Habra won it “hands down”…they showed up and they don’t talk smack….
I just don’t get it…it’s as if your paid NOT TO put them in the TOP 10…
    whatever….

  • the.kid says:

just like everyone else is saying. how is tustin rated higher then La Habra. Honestly what do the Highlanders have to do to get a good spot? They won back-to-back championships and still no love.

  • bigwompom says:

this all in one day. fryer picks tustin 10th because of wilkerson and only wilkerson I dont recall 1 mention of their defense. and then mentions los als challenges this season but that theyre coaching staffs expeirience puts them at 9. hey steve have you seen what la habra has coming back. and check out their coaching staffs expeirience.

  • Country says:

    - 8 returning starters on defense from last year. But the loss of defensive coordinator Coach Henderson, passed away in June, will hamper them a bit.

    - 3 starting offensive lineman from last year return to pave the way for Wilkerson once again. Minshew returns at fullback as well.

Seems like a few good reasons for a spot in someone’s top 10.

If the current starting line up holds up. We should be in really good shape. 4 two-way starters isn’t too bad.

    Wilkerson – RB/OLB
    Hill – RB/DE
    Minshew – FB/MLB
    Stewart – TE/DE

I see a few new faces (with some size to them) on the roster that should help ease the burden these 4 will be carrying as 2 way starters. Hell, as the season progresses. We could possibly see the number of 2 way starters trim down to zero.

  • Hey Country always remember that its the other way around just like at Anaheim Stadium last year.who covered who, REMEMBER?????

  • What i am saying is forget the “covered” this year last year whatever bottom line is La Habra is just good old fashin better than Tustin thats all Tustin in my book sits about 15-20 La Habra will be in top 7 by years end and probably undefeated with one of the toughest schedules they ever had ………….

  • lhfan says:

undefeted no 8-2 realisticly any better and probly top 7

  • MJ says:

Last year the Tustin – La Habra title game was an awesome slugfest and was very close up until the 4th quarter. And it never helps Tustin down the stretch when the Tillers have only a 18 – 20 player rotation, with a lot of key players going both ways.

Nonetheless, hopefully Tustin gets a CIF this year for the 2nd time in 60 years!!! (1948). The defense is gonna have to put up some points and cause a lot of takeaways. And can’t wait til they beat Orange Lu – AGAIN! (Tustin beat O-Lu in the middle of this decade, like 45-22 or something).

This guy bruinfanforever or whatever he calls himself is so bitter that La Habra is one of the top 7 teams throughout the OC that he says just about anything EXCEPT that La Habra has EARNED not given but earned the right to be among the elite and they dont do it mirrors it is a top notch unit/program that they have there and it didnt happen overnight lots of hard work and lots of WINS put them there not me not Calhoun/Albano so it will take well guys like you cannot ktake that away with comments that you know are just bitterness talkin, cmon admit it dude LaHabra won 2 straight and i dont care what division it is they are 25-2 over past 2 years give the credit where its due!!!
