O.C. football Top 25: No. 25

football_iconO.C. FOOTBALL TOP 25
25. Cypress

(7-4 overall, 5-0 and 1st place in Empire League in 2008)

The Centurions might not go undefeated in league again, but they should be in the running for another Empire championship. Cypress brings some all-league first-team returnees like receiver Akeelie Muhammad, lineman-turned-H-back Jamil Douglas and cornerback Jared Cohen. Douglas is among the county’s top recruits.

I thought you said St. Margaret’s will remained #25 as long as they don’t lose. Last time I checked they are yet to lose since you said that….

    • stevefryer says:

      That was last year.

    • Buford McCracken says:

Fryer, have you seen the size of st. Margaret’s line this year…I believe that was your main complaint. They romp most of 20-25 in your poll…they physically outlast those teams cuz they are in better condition too.

    • You can’t romp on a team if that team is not on your schedule. Look, Coach Harry Welch has forgotten more about football than you and I will ever know. He puts the nonleague schedule together. Coach Welch knows what he is doing.

    • Papaya Bob says:

Have to concur with Stevie. Coach Welch and the administration at St. Margaret’s are cheating their players. I’m sure if you ask the kids, they would want to know just how good they are. I’m not saying the Tartans have to play against somebody from the Trinity League, but maybe a lower tier team in a higher division. A Century or Buena Park or Saddleback somebody like that.

    • TartansLetsRoll says:

Francis Parker is a high caliber team when compared to the size. Hypothetically speaking if a victory against them occurs, would thy land a spot in the top 25?

    • Buford McCracken says:

Fryer, you’re right, coach welch does know alot about football, certainly enough to romp half the teams you’ve got up there and he’s got the players to do it too.

Papaya bob, st margaret’s routinely scrimmages such teams in the late summer and absolutely destroys them, in fact I believe they scrimmages saddleback and bolsa last year and were scoring at will, as well as shutting them down completely.

Also, how is st. Margaret’s cheating their players? I don’t think that any of those kids feel cheated, that’s a laugher.

    • Buford McCracken says:

Also fryer, coach welch gets whomever he can get on the schedule. Do you have any idea how tough it is to schedule games @ small schools?

    • Buford McCracken says:

I mean really, do you think they want to drive to Campbell hall or la baptist, or Ontario? Certainly would be alot easier to drive over and kick the doors in on j serra or some pcl team..

    • Papaya Bob says:

St. Margaret’s has a great football program and Coach Welch ia a top notch football coach. There just comes a point when you get tired of winning every game 45-3. Good football teams want to know just how good or great they are. Playing a bunch of over-matched schools will never really show the true potential of St. Margaret’s. That’s what I mean about the kids being cheated. They’ll win a title, again, but they’ll never really know just how great they could be. By the way, scrimmages don’t count. Coaches “play” a lot of kids that normally wouldn’t play during the season. And lastly, I’m not a big fan of JSerra, but the Tartans wouldn’t last against them. But we’ll never know because Coach W would never schedule a game like that.

    • Buford McCracken says:

Still, your comment that the kids at st. Margarets are “cheated” is idiotic at best, in fact, it borders on completely f-ing stupid. The experience they take in playing for the best coach in orange county, as well as the premium education they recieve blows your BS opinion out of the water.

    • Buford McCracken says:

Oh, forgot to say, yeah right you aren’t a fan of jserra because what you are saying is exactly what somebody would say. Jserra won’t play st margaret’s because they know they’ll get taken behind the woodshed. Won’t last? The tartans are in better shape than those guys.
So if being cheated means going 43-0 and collecting rings, then Id much rather be cheated

    • Glen Chervin says:

      Buford,
Chill out, Saint Margarets would have had their helmuts handed to them if they would have played Laguna Hills, Corona Del Mar, Irvine, Westminster or any of a number of relatively small schools last season. Deal with it.
Be happy, the Tartans can compete at lacross. As long as they are not playing CDM or Foothill.

    • Matt says:

Coach Welch is not the best coach in the county.
There is a lot of schools in the county that are blessed with great coaching and coaching staffs.
Look at the SCL or Sunset or Trinity or Freeway and even the Emprie league.
St. Margarets has done a tremendous job of putting a solid small school team on the field but looking at location and the tradition of great football players in that part of the county only shows me that that is exactly what it is.
Your taking second and third tier players from d1 schools of course your gonna dominate.
Remember these boys have been playing with and againist great talent since they were five. They’ve been playing the types like Robbie Pizaco or Mark Sanchez.
You’ve won 40+ plus games with a low level non-conference schedule, I cant say anything about the conference schedule simply because that’s based off the size of the school and well your a small school.
But dont tell me or anyone on here that no one is willing to play a small school. Just take a look at the #25 team in the county Cypress. According to Fryer ;)
Should be ranked a little higher but that’s here or there.
Who do they play? Mater Dei! Yup Mater Dei.
Mater Dei is willing to play Cypress a team that has been traditionally bad except for the last three seasons.
So saying that no buddy wants to play you, well that is just plain bull and as you said it a laugher.
I’m sure anyone would like to go into St. Margarets and end the winning streak.
My first guess would be Missioin Viejo, I’m sure they will be willing to line up againist you.

    • Buford McCracken says:

      First don’t say you because i ain’t.

Second, most of you are shooting from the hip with you opinions

third, out of the teams that chick mentioned, laguna hills is about right

fourth, I’d take welch over any coach in the county without hesitation

fifth, I stand by my statement, st margaret’s has a tough time finding people to play

    • TartansLetsRoll says:

Check out calpreps.com project a matchup. St. Margaret’s 31 pts. Cypress 19 pts.
      Dana Hills 28 pts. St. Margaret’s: 35
Looks like St. Margaret’s is a real contender.

    • tartanpride says:

PLEASE …… PLEASE ……… stop all this mindless talk about the Tartans … They are a good small school program with an outstanding staff that has been on a competitive for the last five years … Before that the program was middle-of-the-road …. In their world, (40 + players) for the entire program (JV and Varsity) they seem to pull together some winning seasons, “no more, no less” !!

They have tired to schedule some larger schools; however, it is difficult and you will see this in years to come that they may be able to book a few larger schools … Scheduling take (timing) and sometimes luck for both schools to have a slot available in their schedule …

As for this season, they win field a team that is sound in fundamentals and executes a balanced game plan that has served them for many years ………

    • tartanpride says:

Lastly …. Who really cares if STEVE FRYER ranks their team or not … He threw us a “bone” last yeaaar after we won the state bowl game and it was like, “whatever” !!

I have heard that he has not been to a Tartan Football game in many years, let along other school’s games, so he normally gets his information from his valued associates … We invited him to visit last year and never heard from him, which in the long run is just fine as his associate, Dan Albano does make the rounds and visits on occasions … Albano is a quality sports guy with a solid understanding of the small school environment …

    • TartansLetsRoll says:

By the way I am done. The players speak for themselves on the field during the games.

    • bounced says:

lol st. maggies players would be carted off the field if they played Dana.

    • tartanpride says:

It amazes me that there are those out there that actually care about what a reporter says about their program who has not made the effort to visit their school, let alone witness an actual game … I think that most of the press who witnessed the Tartans last season would say that they could compete with a number of upper level programs on any given day … Each season is different and this year is no exception … I guess we will never know until that actually happens !!

GOOD LUCK TARTANS in your 2009 season and stay focused on what is important, enjoying your high school years and preparing for your next level of educational challenges where ever they may take you …

    • dead says:

The Tartans would be beaten by a larger school. Face it. You have what? ~500 kids at your school? Just let it go that your program is not going to compete against the higher level teams. I would really like to see you play a team like Mission or San Clemente and win… but it will never happen. Ever.

    • jeffrey says:

dont complain about not being able to schedule good teams when yorba linda high school, a brand new school was able to schedule scrimmages against Tesoro, Mission Viejo, and San Clamente
they can only schedule scrimmages because they only have freshman and sophomores this year.

    • GET READY says:

Most of the teams in Orange County would play Dirty Harrys Tartans. He chooses not to schedule the bigger schools. Why? My guess would be because he wants to ride his winning streak al long as he can. But don’t worry guys, its not gonna last much longer. They play Parker of San Diego (who should have gone to the Bowl game last year) and if though they may not be the team they were last year they will still beat the Tartans. As far as it being difficult to schedule larger schools, Parker doesn’t seem to have any problem doing that. With an enrollment of 496, their other non-league games are against schools with enrollments of 2074, 1689, 917, 1057, and 2894. Looks like their coaches don’t cheat their players and they find out how good they really are.

      9-11-09
      St Margarets Tartans 44-1

    • Josh hall says:

St. Margarets is embarrassing. schedule a decent opponent. nobody cares about your 44 – 1 record. They’ve never beaten a quality opponent.

    • TartansLetsRoll says:

They aren’t 44-1 though. The team is 43-0. For the size of their school they are a great team. There are about 400 students in their high school.

    • tartanpride says:

Again another request, PLEASE … PLEASE … put this mindless talk about the Tartans to rest … They are who they are ………. a small private school (389 students, 50/50 male/female mix) … They compete with “like size schools” within their league and compete with some larger schools, (some over 1000 students) during their preseason / playoffs schedule …

Their program suits-up roughly (40-45 JV/Varsity) players total … The majority of these kids have never played football before, so this makes their program even more difficult to manage … Over the last five years or so, they have been able to produce some winning seasons, so give them a break and praise them for who they are and what they have accomplished !! Be happy for the kids who are able to compete, win and also represent Orange County well when they play against out of county teams like they did in the State Championship game !!

    • empirefootball says:

I remember going to the pacifica vs laguna hills vs northwood scrimmage last season at bolsa grande high. The teams playing before were st. Margarets vs bolsa grande. Come scheduale better teams!

    • tartanmom says:

The TARTANS have nothing else to prove, no one to answer to, and really could care less about any of the nonsense being said about them. They’re too smart for that. When the football team won the bowl game last December, they celebrated with their graduating senior football players who were accepted (based on academics) to Notre Dame, Columbia, Arizona, Georgetown, Berkeley, Pitzer, USC etc. Coach Harry Welch demanded excellence on and off the field. So these young men do it ALL. THEY ALL GET TO PLAY EVERY GAME (unlike the bigger schools that have boys suit up and NEVER get to play), they have a two time STATE BOWL Championship Coach (CANYON and ST. MARGARET’S) and their future doesn’t look too shabby either! They’ll play later in life when it matters most.
      TARTANS forever!

    • tartandad22 says:

Glad to see everyone’s got that pre-season spirit flowing. Thought I’d chime in on my take on St. Margaret’s football after watching them for the last 3 seasons.

      1. As a sports fan I absolutely love to watch St. Margaret’s play football. These kids are well coached, good sports and give everything they have. I have never seen a team that gang tackles so well on every play no matter the score. And believe me, they have had many opportunities to lay back and cruise to victory. These players block, cover, tackle and fight hard.

      2. I think coach Welch does a great job of substituting and letting all the boys play. Yes, it’s easy to do when you are winning games 42-0 at halftime, but to the coach’s credit, he never piles on the score and actively subs even in closer games. Good sportsmanship.

      3. I am personally looking forward to the Parker game and , like others, I would love to see the Tartans tested by higher caliber teams. As an athelete myself, I always seek tougher competition to to see how good I can become and where I fit in in (ranking). I know the Tartan players would like the same thing. The win streak record is meaningless if it’s against small, weak teams. A win over Parker this year without last years QB/Kicker David Mothander would make more people believers.

All in all the blowouts are nice, but close, hard fought games, win or lose, are the most fun and rewarding for the players and the fans.

    • justafan89 says:

All of this is just talk, but seeing how st margarets will never schedule a good team. We all will never know if they can compete. Play a real orange county team an then sit back an talk!

    • whatshisname says:

why dont you play whittier christ, calvary chapple or cerritos valley for starters

    • OCchamp says:

whatsisname…do some research before you make yourself look stupid on this website. St. Margaret’s has played whitter christian 3 out of the last 4 years and crushed them everytime. They also destroyed Calvary Chapel Santa Ana, and Murrieta at their homecoming game. tartans are a great team not only because of their talent but because they play well together. Having a great coach only contributes to the fact that most of these kids have been going to school and growing up with eachother since Pre-School. That is a huge reason why they play so well together, and that reason seems to go unnoticed often times.
