It will be a one-day event -- like a showcase -- at Mater Dei on Jan. 18, with the name of it in honor of Matson, an outstanding coach at Orange Lutheran. Matson, 44, passed away this past spring.
An outstanding coach, sure, but those who knew Tony said he was an even better man.
Mater Dei will play Brea Olinda in the Matson event. Mater Dei-Brea Olinda was the game of the year in the regular season of 2008-09.
Rosary, Foothill, Villa Park and Orange Lutheran also will play in the Matson event. With Rosary and OLu in the same league, the Trinity, you can bet Rosary will play either Foothill or Villa Park, and the same goes for Lutheran.
Looks like a great day of basketball!
Glad to see my dear friend being honored with this event. Who is organizing the event? Is going to be an annual event? Tony was a special guy and will be missed. Thanks to whoever made this happen.
Coach Kiernan and Coach Sink got together after Tonys memorial service and thought it would be a great idea to play each other and have all the proceeds go to the Matson family and honor all of Tonys good work.
They put the game on MLK day and invited OLU to play Villa Park and Rosary to play Foothill.
The goal is to sell MD out for Tony.
Coach Kiernan and Coach Sink would love to make this an annual event.
What a Honor...my brother was a great man, coach, brother, son, uncle, father and husband! He will be watching this event with a big smile on his face. My Mother, Father, my children and I truely miss him. I had hoped he would be like a father fiqure to my kids as we lost their dad/ my husband in November. Tony and I grew up on a great street in Yorba Linda...we were close and with our busy lives as adults we kinda lost sight of what mattered and that is to keep in touch, see each other often and say "I LOVE YOU". I will never get that chance again so I tell you all not to forget those things! I hope that If I can help in any way with this event that someone will contact me. Thanks Coach Sink and Coach Kiernan...our Family is very appreciative. Lisa Matson-Neal
