Newport Harbor's boys and girls have captured the titles at the California State High School Water Polo Championships on Sunday afternoon in Newport Beach.

In the boys final at Newport Harbor, Zach Lucas scored three goals and Blake Kelly added two and played strong defense on Alex Wherry as the Sailors handled Mater Dei, 8-3, in the final. Newport led 3-0 at halftime and 7-1 after three periods. Both teams were full strength. Wherry finished with one goal.

Newport goalie Chris Whitelegge was excellent in cage with eight saves.

In the girls final at Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor defeated Sunset League rival Los Alamitos, 11-6.

Kaleigh Gilchrist continued her strong play with seven goals and three assists.

The Griffins played without U.S. junior team member Kaley Dodson, who is training with the junior team. The Lady Tars dominated Sunday. In the semifinals, they beat Palos Verdes, 15-3.

After winning their title, the Newport girls joined the Newport boys back at their home pool for a photo session. Yes, it was a special day for Newport water polo. It's rare in Southern California that a program can win boys and girls water polo championships on the same day. In Northern California, it's possible because the high school sports are in the same season. But here in SoCal, thankfully, they are different seasons.
