FULLERTON - Sometimes losses can actually be a good thing for a team. Servite proved that on Wednesday at the Sunny Hills Summer League.
Two days after poor execution resulted in a loss to Valencia, the Friars were smarter with their first touches and completed precision passing in the final third to run past La Habra, 4-0, in a pool play game.
"I don't think we played that badly against Valencia. I just think our execution was poor. We made a point of addressing that after Valencia. That is what summer is for. We want to learn from our mistakes," Servite coach Mike Lussier said. "We pointed out the errors, and I thought the guys did a good job addressing that today."
That was obvious in the Friars' first goal. Rafi Balikcioglu sent a perfect cross to Brendan Luna, which he knocked into the goal. Luna, who was making his first appearance with the Friars since suffering an injury last season, scored once again in the closing minutes of the second half to set the final margin.
La Habra gioal Bubby Rossman stopped Luna's first shot, but he couldn't control the rebound, and Luna jumped on the loose ball and sent int into an empty net.
Charlie Miller and Shane Fontaine also added goals for the Friars. Fontaines came off a penalty kick after the Highlanders were called for a penalty in the box.
All four of the goals were scored in the second half; however, the Friars had a good chance at taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. Garret Bradbury had cleared his mark and was dribbling into the box when the ref blew the whistle to signal the end of the half.
