
Capistrano Valley pitcher Tyler Matzek, who was picked 11th overall in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies, was selected the 2009 Mr. Baseball State Player of the Year by CalHiSports.com.
Matzek, the Register’s player of the year, becomes the fourth county recipient of the award since 1980. Ian Stewart (La Quinta, 2003), Tim Redington (Esperanza, 1987) and Lenny Dykstra (Garden Grove, 1981).
Matzek, who has signed with the University of Oregon, posted a 13-1 record with a 0.97 ERA and 106 strikeouts. He also had a .404 batting average with eight home runs and 32 RBIs.
