Newport Harbor has relieved Evan Chalmers of his duties as baseball coach there, effective this past Monday. Chalmers, 44, coached the Sailors for four seasons. The program was among the most-struggling in county baseball, but the Sailors rose to respectability under Chalmers. They beat Edison, the No. 3 team in the state, in a Sunset League game this season. Harbor was 9-16 overall and 5-10 in the tough Sunset League in 2009. Chalmers will continue as a history teacher at Newport Harbor, and is getting ready to run a youth baseball camp that starts next week. He already has offers from other schools' head coaches to become an assistant coach with their programs. It's a sure bet that Chalmers will be a top assistant coach, at least, in 2010.
FVHS will take him as head coach.
Steve.. How about you do some research as to why he was fired... Maybe you should also include why the athletic director was fired... You are about a week late with this story...Get the facts like you always do. But check them, check them again and then re-check them
"Newport Harbor has relieved Evan Chalmers of his duties as baseball coach there, effective this past Monday. "
Steve did mention this was last week, hence "this past Monday" dont blame him for not getting the story until now.
Wow. Evan is an awesome guy and a good coach. I am shocked to learn this. Hopefully some school will pick him up.
Maybe he would like to coach in Fullerton. Sunny Hills, fired their coach as well due to misc reasons. (Marc Patino) Very similar record to Newport Harbor. Newport Harbor makes the OC Register, Sunny Hills as usual is flying below the radar, maybe they'll start looking after 2010 season gets underway. Go Lancers!
Evidently, stupid whiny parents are running the show at Newport. I'm sure a couple parents with little wimpy dinks for sons complained because they didn't play enough or maybe because the coach was "mean" to them. Good luck in the future kid!! I'm sure your boss will be sympathetic to your mommy's complaints. But worse than that is the principal. Way to have your coach's back Vossen, and good luck with your "new direction". What terrible communication skills you have. Principals are supposed to lead and guide. But you don't lead or guide Vossen. You just cave and crumble. "Going in a new direstion?" What the heck is that supposed to mean? Coach Chalmers will definately be better off somewhere where he's appreciated. And the offers are rollin' in. But Newport is still left with Vossen. What a shame for the future of Newport Athletics.
MannyA...
The only reason Steve know about this story was because there was an article in the Daily Pilot news paper and he just reposted that information as his own.. Look at the time of the post...
Come on Steve do some research for us on this one I dare you... Ask Vossen how many application he has for the coaching position. Ask him what his new direction is.
You know if this was Brinkly getting fired you would be all over it... You must be to busy scouting the talent at St. Jo's hospital for the football class of 2029
Didn't you guys hear me say....................SUNNY HILLS. Distinguished academic school.............get that coach over there asap. Living at the beach is overrated. Sunny Hills plays tough competition...................hence their weaker than weak success.
When my son graduated on Thursday, I booed principal Vossen! After 4 years of track, 4 years of soccer, 2 years of Cross Country, and 1 year of Football, I have the deapest respect for the athletic department and Coach Tweit. My son never played baseball, but I have heard great things about the baseball coach as well. Tweit attended every sporting event that I did at NH, and believe me that was alot! He was dedicated to the school and the atheletes.
I am extremely happy that this was my son's last year at NH, but sad for the next round of atheletes with Vossen's new direction for atheletics. The only direction left after both atheletic directors are gone is down.
Jim T - you should thank the principal for not letting whiny parents run everything. My sons team finished in last place this season (& we also pay over $1,000 to play ; must be the way it is now days) in a decent league. SM finished in a tie for 3rd (with Orange Lutheran) in one of the strongest leagues. Why is that so bad? Other than Trayce Thompson, who did they have that received D-1 scholarships? I only know Thompson because of the newspaper article in the Register.
Thompson doesn't pitch, did SM have any pitching? You need real guys for that league.
Having a son who played at FV I heard the AD is no longer there. The head coach there blamed everything on his assistants and the AD, their horrible principal went for it and ran the AD. Having followed high school baseball in the county for 30 years let me tell you the situation at FV is the worst I have ever heard of. The really disturbing thing is that the baseball coach teaches like he coaches so all the students that come in contact with him be it as a student or baseball player they are being cheated of education on and off the playing field.
Joe Baseball,
This will be the 2nd AD that resigned due to hands being tied by the Principal regarding the baseball coach. The AD that just resigned was a great guy and wanted to clean up the Athletic Dept. with baseball on top of the list. But for some reason the Principal keeps protecting this coach. The kids & parent laugh behind the coach's back and have no respect for him as a coach or as a person. The FVHS baseball program is the laughing stock of Sunset League. The kids deserve better!
Jim T - So your son gets cut because you don't coach the team anymore and you are bitter at the SM coach? And player development is this coaches problem? Didn't they have an outfielder taken in the 2nd round of the MLB draft this year? Sounds like REALLY poor player development. I think all parents wish there sons could be so poorly developed. Too bad this kid couldn't pitch for SM because even you, Jim T, with your limited knowledge of baseball know pitching is what matters most.
Did Capo Valley have any pitching this year?
Stu if the parents at FV got together like they did at Los Al, the principal would have no choice but to get rid of the baseball coach. But I think the parents want to whine, but deep down they know their kids just are not that talented, they are woefully behind in development when they get to FV, and without a good program from top to bottom they cannot coach the kids up to become any better than average, and as you know in the Sunset league that will not cut it. The kids need solid coaching from the start and they just do not have the coaches and i hate calling them that to make these kids better.
Joe
The parents wont band together because they are afraid their kids will be punished with playing time. However, many many parents have gone to the principal/AD regarding their concerns about the coach's lack of character.
I believe programs start at the bottom. FV has a great freshman coach that grooms the kids very well. But it ends there. The JV & Varsity teams are very dysfunctional due to poor leadership. There is no communication between Varsity coach and the freshman coach. The Varsity coach knows NOTHING about the kids move up from the freshman team. The Varsity coach basically keeps all OCBA (FV feeder team) kids regardless their lack of talent. Some think that the OCBA coach picks the roaster each year since the Varsity coach does not know the kids. Don't know why the Varsity coach doesn't communicate with the freshman coach instead?!
Is santa margarita losing players to Jserra? I cant believe Sm doesnt have a top notch baseball program. How are they not taking kids from Tesoro at least?
These private schools need to look around the county for great coaches. Marcus Jones at Esperanza High School as the pitching coach? This guy has seen more baseball at the highest levels than probably every coach in the county. The parents say great things about how he handles their kids. I think coach Jones even pitched in the big leagues? I know he played for Dave Snow at Long Beach State after Esperanza. Derek baker at Tustin High as an assistant? Im sure there is many more around the county. Those are just two off the top of my head who should be Head Coaches
ABolutely SM is losing players to all the local baseball programs. Joe Kurasch transfered before his Junior year to JSerra due to the lame V Coach at SM. The word is out and unfortunately the AD is a lame duck as well. No one really cares about Baseball at SM. Good writtens.
Stu,
FV freshman coach is a moron. All he does is bully the kids and make them afraid, if he knew the game the kids would show his coaching ability at the next level, they are totally unprepared to play at the next level be it varsity or JV. Any communication between the Varsity coach and the Freshman coach would lead to nothing because neither one of them knows anything about the game. Its not about improving the kids for either of them its about their egos. This last comment I heard from another parent who had a son on varsity as a freshman but moved him to JV due to the miserable coaching at the Varsity level. He said, the problem with the coaches these days is that they are educators, teachers, not baseball men, they are pretending to be coaches. There are very few true baseball men left in high school baseball, they have all retired or moved on due to other circumstances. That is why in ten years all high level baseball will be played as travel teams, good high school players will no longer play for the high schools they are attending. Man, am I glad my son graduated this year.
Jim T & Tony E -
I do love crosswords!
Don't get defensive. I don't have a dog in this race. My point was that if players aren't being developed then how is a guy drafted 2nd round? Your comeback that he is overated is very weak. MLB teams do not draft players (at least this high in the draft) just because his dad is famous. I'm not saying he is the greatest coach ever just responding to the developement question.
Clearly, you guys are way ahead of MLB scouts. What are you doing wasting your time here.
My other point was that you say SM has had many talented players over the years, & I agree with you, but if you look at who wins it is the team with many talented pitchers.
As far as the Kurracsh kid leaving the school for JSerra it lookes like a good move for him. And if what someone else posted about SM having two injured stud pitchers this year is true then perhaps Kurracsh saw the writing on the wall & went somewhere he could be the main guy. Just speculating (but at leat I admit it).
Lastly, counseling has been mentioned a couple of different times by one or both of you guys, what does that mean?
Maybe cuz of his Potential & Genetic background?
Evan Chalmers is one of the best people for kids I have met in 25 years of coaching, Eric Tweit was the most involved AD i have ever seen in HS...Good luck replacing these great guys....Evan can spend more time with HIS family and not worrying about the Newport crybabies anymore...good luck see you in LB some time.
SS
Every school has it's issues. People at Esperanza HS have been trying to get rid of the head coach for years. They call him "untouchable".
Year after year he intimidates parents and kids from the very first meeting of the year and says" come get me" if you can.
It's time for some to just move on and bring new blood in. AD's should look at past records and not from the last 10 years or so. Look at the last 5 or so years and base there performance like any other job in the real world. Wins and losses.
If you haven't won a championship in league or CIF in 5-7 years, then fire that coach and move on.
Quit whining about what the new YL High School is getting that you didn't get and that you had to do it all yourself. The parents did it not you !!
This will be Esperanza's last competitive year. Hello YL High School.
Welcome Coach Stein- you were great to play for at Eldo... YLHS is lucky to have you.
How have they been trying to get rid of Curran? Why would they get rid of one of the best coaches in the county? You are completely clueless. 3 cif championships 1 national championship a #2 final ranking in the country among a ton of other accolades. 3 time cif coach of the year 3 time national coach of the year 600 + wins and 250 losses 6 cif final appearances and 26 Cif appearances in 29 years. Please tell me another coach in the county with stats like that. Bob Zamora is the only other one i can think of who comes close.
You sound like one of those parents who is mad and upset your little league all star kid got cut from the program cause he couldnt hack it at EHS. This is going to be Esperanza's last competitive year? HAHAHAH willing to make a wager on that?
But hey lets look at the last five or so years years
2004 Cif quarter finals
2005 Cif semi finals - National Classic Champs
2006 Sunset Champs Cif quarter finals
2007 Cif Semi Finals
2009 Cif First round after the team started 2-9 National Classic 3rd place
And what is the school getting? A lazy coach and a bunch of kids? Grats. YL HS may get a lot of the kids but without a coach with a clue you got no chance.
Next time maybe you should do research before spewing bs from your mouth. Hows YL JV team doing this summer again EHS? HAHA must be fun to have a bunch of kids cut from EHS freshman team but hey this will be EHS last competitive year right?
Oh yeah and if Marcus Jones the pitching coach stays at EHS look out. Who is your pitching coach at YLHS? Esperanza has a former big leaguer as a pitching coach if im a parent in YL there is no question thats where i would be sending my kid.
I still cant believe some of these schools in Orange County arent begging to hire Coach Jones as their Head Coach. From what I have heard from a couple of parents in the EHS program, this guy is not just teaching baseball but teaching the EHS kids the mental game as well. Would love to hear what other programs in the county have a coach that knows the mental game like coach jones? Maybe Brett Kay at JSerra? Fullerton and Long beach guys benefit from learning from one of the most respected Mental Coaches in the country Ken Ravizza. Hmmm i wonder why JSerra has burst on the scene with Brett Kay?
I heard about this thread and thought I would reply.
Evan Chalmers is a class act and I'm truly saddened that he lost his job as coach. He helped my team to a CIF championship in 1993. Great coach and even better guy.
RaiderNation thanks for the kind words.
Jonas as someone who has worked and played for coach Curran over the years, I can tell you that you are completely wrong. I dont understand why people and parents are intimidated by the "little general" he helped me tremendously throughout my baseball career. He got me a scholarship, he taught me how to play the game right by hustling and never giving up, and now after i got my cup of coffee in the big leagues and spilled it all over me, I realized he helped me get to the Big Leagues as well. He teaches the little things in baseball that most coaches don't have a clue about. The problem most parents have is that they don't understand our style of play at Esperanza. If you don't buy into what Coach Curran is trying to do then you are sent packing. Its simple. He has a strategy and if you aren't buying into that strategy then he doesn't want you around. If you can't deal with people like that well I got news for you. Good luck joining corporate america
I wish FV's principal had balls like the NH principal!
JT,
Believe me even though we are a public school we also pay $1,000+ per season too.
Jim T,
SM actually lost 2 studs on the hill to injury each of the last two years. Total of 3 D1 guys this year, only 1 scholorship (Thompson). Finished only 1 game under .500 with a very tough schedule. Not a lot of talent in the program as a whole. Sounds like a pretty good coaching job actually. But your view is exactly what we've seen at many programs over the years from whiny parents. And then they get all defensive. It always comes back to someone who is bitter that their kid wasn't actually as good as the parent thought they were. It's too bad because this coach in particular is a great dude. As is the Newport Harbor coach. Let it go.
SM outfielder is overhyped? I think we all rest our case about your lack of baseball knowledge Jim T. You're obviously smarter than the 40 scouts at each SM game to watch said outfielder, including Tommy Lasorda who came out too. I can't believe the White Sox didn't discuss drafting him in the 2nd round without first checking with you. What a tragedy for the Chicago fans. You should run a baseball camp or coaches clinic. We all dream of having half the baseball intelligence that you were apparently blessed with. Oh well, one can only dream I guess.
Jim T,
So are you sticking up for the guy who was so-called injured? You sound like a guy who would. Irvine was reallllly happy about that one. The season has been over for a while now, you should come out see the overhyped one play this summer. There's a few people there that would be happy to "discuss" your insecurities with you.
Jim T
If you knew anything you would know that the so called injured pitcher was not injuured and UCI knew that and has asked him to look for another school. SM Had no pitching after Kelly and the other two seniors were out. The big Jr was not effective. They had hitting but in that league that's not enough. The so called hyped one has been tearing it up if you ever came out to a game but since your son graduated in 08 you would not of known that.
