Newport Harbor's boys water polo team is playing like a squad destined to be ranked No. 1 in Orange County's preseason poll in the fall.
On Sunday, the Sailors captured the difficult Newport 18-and-under tournament, defeating Rose Bowl in the finals. On May 31, they finished first at the Villa Park 18-and-under tournament. Those titles sandwiched a third-place showing in successfully qualifying for the Junior Olympics in the 18-and-under division. The top-two teams at the qualifying tournament were club powers SOCAL and CHAWP.
"They're playing pretty well," Newport Harbor coach Jason Lynch said of his squad. "(But) we have a lot to work on."
The work continues later this month with the U.S. club championships, June 26-28, in Santa Barbara. That's right: the Sailors' high school teams will competing against many of the top club teams in the nation.
Here's the starting group the Sailors have been featuring:
Matt Russell, Sr. in fall
Jack Yeager, lefty, Sr.
Zach Lucas, Sr
Blake Kelly, Sr
Dane Sequeira, lefty, Sr.
Farrel South, So.
Gks Ikaika Sarme, Sr. and Chris Whitelegge, Jr.
Dan can u post a prelimiary top 5 or ten to show all the fans where the teams are at, at the moment thanks.
or just what teams look good next year like championship teams like foothill and mater dei and other top teams like santa babara, havard westlake, jserra, servite, el toro, los al, etc.
Top-five county boys water polo (6/19)
1. Newport
2. El Toro
3. CdM
4. JSerra
5. Mater Dei
Are there any individual standouts at any of these schools (and why)?
why is mater dei ranked so low?
throughout this spring/summer season mater dei has gone
3-0 against CDM, they qualified much higher then JSerra at the
Junior Olympic qualifications, and have had many close games with Newport including a shootout victory for mater dei in the very important Iron Man League Finals
I totally agree with why? mater dei has defintily shown that they are better than at least cdm and Also that they rank up there with newport not 4 spots below them.
Hey Dan,
Since some are already disputing your pre-2009/2010 season top 5 for boys water polo, how about risking it all with a top 5 for the girls as well? Laguna, Los Al, and Edison have many return starters and are playing very well among "high school teams" this summer. But it seems like the Newport girls are playing consistently above the top OC teams so far: taking 1st at the Villa Park tournament last weekend; qualifying against "university level" club teams for a spot in the 20&U tournament in Stockton next month; finishing 6th (highest among "high school teams") in the Commerce Cup, taking 2nd to Dos Pueblos at the Santa Barbara tourney; and 3rd against club teams at Irvine tournament to start the summer..
from a player on one of those top five teams, mater dei is hands down the second best team in the county. they play real water polo, unlike a few of those other teams
Newport looked very strong in the recent US Club Championships. They finished fourth, loosing to the SoCal "Dream-team" , a powerful Lamorinda Club Team and a nail-biter to San Diego Shores. Based on their performance this past weekend, I would definitely have Newport as the #1 high school team in the OC.
So in the villa park tourney this weekend cdm beat el toro. Mater dei beat cdm earlier i think that your top 5 deserves some rethinking.
Some of the teams were missing players due to the Youth National Team and were not allowed to participate in their high school team games per Lynch. Newport HS players were allowed to play for both the Youth Team and the Newport Team.
