Trabuco Hills’ J.J. Mayer was one of the county’s most under-rated quarterbacks last season. Mayer showed his value in the playoffs and later signed with Southern Utah.
While Mayer is a key loss for Trabuco Hills, the Mustangs showed at the Air Strike passing tournament that they still will be able to attack teams with the pass – and that’s good news for standout wide out Chris Simonton.

Trabuco Hills played junior-to-be Ryan Ochoa and senior-to-be A.J. Josue, a lefty, at quarterback and turned in a competitive showing at the blockbuster tournament.
The Mustangs beat Long Beach Poly, 19-0, in their second game as Simonton had two touchdowns. Trabuco fell to Oaks Christian, 20-12, in the first round.
In their last game of the morning, the Mustangs pushed Edison before falling, 28-24. Trabuco Hills’ Ethan Hall made it close with a late touchdown reception.
Trabuco Hills coach Jason Negro said Ochoa and Josue are battling for the starting spot but added that Ochoa is emerging as a frontrunner at this point.
If the Mustangs’ passing game continues to progress, look for their offense to be balanced and potent once again.
