Mosqueda-Lewis, Adams and Vaioletama led the Monarchs to a 32-1 record, a Trinity League championship, a CIF-SS Division II-A championship and the Southern California Division II regional finals this past season.

Brea Olinda sophomore Justine Hartman, who helped the Ladycats win a Century League title, a CIF-SS Division II-AA title and the Division II state championship, was also selected to the squad.

Mosqueda-Lewis was selected the 2009 Gatorade State Player of the Year, OCVarsity’s Sophomore of the Year, Trinity League MVP and first team All-County.

Adams was OCVarsity’s Freshman of the Year and made third-team All-County.

Even with these three stars (and they are good) Mater Dei could not beat the Ladycats of Brea Olinda last season.

  • efan says:

Wow way to just mention the Mater Dei girls – I guess Justine Hartman who also made the team and Bonnie Samuelson who also got an invite and participated don’t deserve to be mentioned HUH – what does that tell the OC community!!!!!!!

  • efan says:

Actually it’s stuff like this that feeds the feeling at the try outs that the Mater Dei girls were a lock before they even showed up – as there were players apparantly who played better from across the nation and felt they didn’t even have chance because Mater Dei gets so much press and they live on their rep – the other feeling is that Mater Dei got a national ranking way above what they should have considering they did not play as tough a schedule even as Brea and actually struggled at the end and never made it to a state final – go figure!!!! Now I see why people get so upset.

    • Barbarino says:

      What Press?
Two years ago MD won 13 games and barely made the playoffs. What rep?
They have turned their program around but there is no national rep, maybe on the boys side and maybe in the future.

MD played a tough schedule, played in a tough league and went 32-1 and won a CIF title with a very young team. Brea played an even tougher schedule and was the better team at the end. They had a tough experienced team.

What advantage would the National Selection Committee have by making it a lock for MD kids?

Congratulations to all the players who participated and to all the county girls who played. Everyone of those kids, whether they made thwe team or not will be a D1 kid!

  • others says:

There were 7 girls selected from the socal area – those Carlos chooses to mention along with Justine Hartman, Bonnie Samuelson, Ariya Crook Williams and Kacy Swain – I don’t know why Carlos feels the need to always just write about Mater Dei – the reporter for USA contacted the local media and it is Arias choice who he writes about.

We should be proud that we have such talent in our area as having 7 players out of 34 from the whole nation – just from our area is wonderful and shows how strong these girls are.

  • pete says:

I can’t believe that the original article left out Justine. What a shame that an Orange County Register article would focus on just one school. ALL of the kids deserve to be recognized. BUT to leave off a player who made the team is beyond comprehension.

  • pete says:

The article also failed to mention that Justine was named all-state first team Division II, in addition to all county. Let’s give everyone the same recognition.

  • I feel bad for the coaches at Brea Olinda if this is the kind of whiny, whimpering behavior they have to deal with on a daily basis from the fans and parents at their school.

I’ve always been impressed by how well the Ladycats play. But the stuff on this blog makes me realize what a pathetic mess surrounds this program off the court.

How sad for these girls that no one seems content with simply acknowledging what a great achievement this is. They get to represent their country — that’s awesome! Way to go girls!

  • others says:

Nice try, but what you are saying would only be a reflect ion of the Brea coaches – they run and lead the team, they are the adults in charge of the program, kids and parents act accordingly to how they are allowed to act.

  • glass half full says:

congrats, but still dont get the hartman craze. samuelson yes, but saw hartman in the title games when it matteres and dont get it. maybe it is arias, does he even go to any games other than the elite

  • blogger says:

I agree but from reading a lot of the blogs the inside presence wasn’t too great and the posts couldn’t make a lay up – apparantly two of the best were not even there and another freshman was better. I think there has been too much hype around this kid which will hurt her in the long run – harberts really did a number on her when they played against each other and you are right about the state final she did not look good.

  • lrob62 says:

I have heard kids telling blatent lies like they’re making a speech for a beauty pageant, parents trashing other kids to make their kids seem better, coaches trashing other teams kids to make their team seem better – as the world turns continues and its happening at these big schools that drool for the media attention. What happened to common sense and sportsmanship and to acknowledge all the talent that we have – it will all come out in the wash and as it’s happening it’s a pity those involved can’t take a step back and ask if what they are really doing is whats right for their kids! Peace!

  • glass half full says:

irob62 is right on about press. why dont carlos and other writers focus more on stories that acknowledge some girls achievment in a normal team situation like the bryant girl at buena park. I mean theres more than materdei, brea, and troy in oc girls basketball.and you guys add to thr inbalance with your constant drooling over these programs. in what way you ask. well lets see , if Im a dotting parent who thinks my average skilled daughter whos barely 5ft nothing and all she dreams about is the lady cats or tray, well Im going to enroll her there go to their summer camps so the coach knows her, and after all is siad and done, because of a spineless CIF board who is responsible for this mess in the first place ,the competition is top heavy in the county, and you have a bunch of disapointed kids who could be shining stars at lesser programs, be happy productive students at schools they belong at with their childhood friends and bottom line enjoying their hi school years. but no, instead they live their parents dream and provide a social outlet for the parents main goal, look at me my girl plays on the ladycats JV team, even though deep down I know thers a transfer coming that will leave her on the bench through her senior year.Get it , its time for CIF to fix their mess.

  • lrob62 says:

I hear you glass – I do believe in karma and maybe it doesn’t evolve as quickly as we all like but it does catch up with people – the Troy situation is rediculous and the recruiting of late has been rampant but he has pissed off a lot of coaches which isn’t a good thing taking players that had previously enrolled in other schools.

I wish it was one way or the other, either let their be no rules or make everyone follow the same as the way it is now just seems to benefit the rich!

  • lrob62 says:

? for ya glass – who will give Troy a run in freeway this year?

  • glass half full says:

Irob62, to answer your quest nobody. sonora keeps adding the recruits but its like ordering appetizers at a real expensive restraunt. they dont have the inside presence to match up with barret or sanchez when she decides to go inside. and I dont see troys other gaurds beeing the least intimidated by walton ,thomas, or ulrich. so still the same status quo.lets talk about about whats below troy, well clearly sonora so theres where your upset will come. from what Ive heard the big blond from sunny hills went back to sweden or maybe another school, and lee didnt have a strong spring. BP and fullerton have 1 girl each who are good post players and we will see if bryant was a fluke last year all though she does play for ryb club team. I really think the surprize in the mix will be la habra. remember theyre young and now have some expeirience.add a transfer and an incoming freshmen whos good and ready to go and they might catch some people sleeping.

  • glass half full says:

all most forgot final freeway prediction for 2010. 1 troy, no reason to think otherwise 2 sonora , still to strong for rest, but attitude makes them ripe for an upset 3 la habra, going on a limb but they have the tools to pullit off and have young experienced players. BP, still have to account for bryant and soria. 5 fullerton , lost alot to grad and unless richardson did some recruiting didnt have strong lower levels. 6 sunning hills , no angle no boards, cant live on lees 3pts all season.

  • glass half full says:

hey baots and girls its summer time and teams are practicing and start playing next week. whats going on with the usa team and the girls from oc. how many new recruits did brea and sonora get to enroll for summer school. is troy on its way out as power house. will all those whinny eldo moms be whinning again this year about brea or will their new target be the frosh=soph girls at yorba linda. will there be a preseason rematch between kiernan and sink like the good old days. whats up carlos. theiman have missed you. lets fet it going folks. whats up with club scene, got to see nicole ballesteros shes legit not sure of little sis,saw money lee too the hawks better not nest their eggs in that basket.will any freeway girls step up and challenge the monster of monsters alex sanchez.any body skip out on their programs . lets go the season will be here faster than we can imagine .

  • glass half full says:

still no news on how usa team girls team is doing or how summer leaghes are going? and where is carlos?

  • blogger says:

From the blogs -OC girls Lewis litin it up in Murfreesboro, Engeln and Sameulson litin it up in Oregon and Chicago.

  • glass half full says:

thanks blogger for info, hows the hartman girl doing by the way, any news on summer leagues or clubs. and if aug is no contact period how does troys asst head coach hold a hi school age camp at troy with out having contact .

  • blogger says:

From what I’ve heard has not played much.

Don’t know anything about this camp but they are usually a way of getting kids on to the campus.

    News from the blogs:

Lewis team Tenn Flight finally took another hit losing to Boo Williams younger team, Adams WCP lost in oregon and locally but great news for Ramirez of Cal Sparks getting a schollie to LMU – you may remember her from Inglewood who took down Foothill. Vaioletamas Sol lost in both Oregon and Nashville she may have to play with better players next year to make a run on the club circuit. Calswish rolled to another championship in Nashville with Harris and Samuelson doing well according to Hoopgurlzs twitter and younger Samuelson also blogged about in Nashville by Hoopgurlz twitter.

    The locals keep doing well.

  • blogger says:

Congratulations to the OC based club Cal swish for winning the most prestigious touranment in the nation and to OCs Samuelson – named MVP by Hoopgurlz, and also Engeln, Harberts, Harris, Sanchez – great job, first time a west coast team has ever been crowned best in the nation at the high school level.

  • oc best says:

how bout some of others. how did ballisteros do, or the overateds like money lee or hartman girl.there had to be some other good club tourneys goin on this summer

  • blogger says:

Hartmans team Storm had some really close games and survived to semis where Boo Williams, Chloe Wells team blew them out by 30 but Chelsea GRay out of Norcal was named All tournament, Heard Oc Rythm did some battles and Ballesteros got some offers, she is the major palyer on that team.

Interesting blog on “they’re playing basketball” asking where will Lewis play next year!!!
