  • Fran says:

Go Annika! You are amazing. 17 years old and on the Women's Senior Team Roster! Definitely Athlete of the Year.

  • Mike says:

Mary-Rachel Walsh is one of the most amazing high school athletes I have seen in Southern California over the last 30 years. I have never seen anyone dominate three completely different sports the way she did. Throw in sportsmanship and scholar athlete and she is in a league of her own. Watching her play is a special treat, and the OC sports scene we will miss her next year.

  • DAN ALBANO says:

Fran - you are correct - Annika has been recently named to the U.S. women's national team for the upcoming FINA World League. She is a shining star for USA Water Polo at the 2-meter offense position. It appears that her star might have arrived a little sooner than some might have expected.

Yes, Annika can help USWP now.

  • Nick Adams says:

Many have said that when Mary was first learning to speak, her first word was "Community"
She soon followed this up by learning many other words including "help" "love" "soul" "cleansing" and "shining beacon" . When I heard this I thought wow, but I soon learned over the years, that this was just the beginning of her intelligence

Just by chance at the ripe young age of 2 she said those words in a completely random order one day in which the sentence turned out to be something along the lines of

"I hope to be a shining beacon to show others to love and help their community, as not only is it beneficial towards the community, but it is cleansing for the soul." - Mary Rachel (age 2)

    • Fran says:

Are you for real Nick? What's the motive behind your post? Poking fun? Sarcasm? I can't figure it out...

      • Nick Adams says:

        Fran,
        I am serious.
why would i poke fun or use sarcasm?

That story is nothing but the truth.
This is why she deserves to win.

        • Sean John McSmokey says:

I agree with this Nick guy. This is a very serious matter Fran. Unfortunately I've never had the privilege to meet Mary but I've seen her dominate on the field like no one ever before...and I watched Reggie Bush throughout his whole high school career at Helix HS.

        • Skeptical as well... says:

I think what Fran was getting at is that it's hard to take your post at face value. For a two year old to randomly order some newly learned words and come up with your quoted sentence, and then attributing any significant comprehension or understanding of what she just said, is a bit of a stretch. For you to then say, "This is why she deserves to win." surprises me as well. Regardless, she sounds like an outstanding student athlete. Good luck to her.

  • bighsfootballfan says:

Just way too close to call both amazing any way this could make up the final bracket but with that being said i choose not to vote for either young lady due to the fact i cant in good concensice seperate the two as far as representing themselves as Five Star student athlets.........Fantastic Job both of .

  • Madison Gottlieb says:

Mary- Rachel deserves this more than anyone. She is an amazing athlete that contributes to the team in many different ways, with leadership, sportsmanship, and always tries her best no matter what.
Being on her team for tennis and lacrosse season, I learned much more than just the sport fundamentals, I learned the way to go about the sport that I play with the act of leadership, kindness and sportsmanship. She was an inspiration to me because she always tries her best and gives it all shes got. Congrats Mary on getting this far, you are a superstar!!

  • David Kim says:

We already know whose going to win

  • Tickle Me Elmo says:

I love Mary-Rachel. She desirves it so much. I agree with Madison Gottlieb's commet 100%.
    Mary-Rachel is the best athlete!
GO Mary-Rachel!!! You are a superstar and i look up to you!

  • Katie Fragapane says:

Mary deserves this more than anyone. Not only does she play tennis, soccer, and lax, but she was a captain in all three. She is amazing at all three of these sports and an overall amazing athlete.

    I love you Mary!!!

  • Mary!
first i would like to start by saying that mary is amazing at all of the sports she plays.
second i would like to say that I love her.

    I Love You!

  • DAN ALBANO says:

Where are the aquatics fans? Dries would be my pick here

    • Aquatics fan #771 says:

I think it's because high school water polo season has been over for a while now. It's just a fluke that I happened to check this web site at this time...

    • swimfan says:

I think the aquatics fans go for Cindy all the way DEN.

    • Really? says:

Had I not read this series of posts, I honestly would not know who Annika Dries is. Obviously, she is a world-class water polo player since she has already been named to the USA national team. I'm very impressed.

"Aquatics fans" do not follow both swimming and water polo. I think the problem is Dries has never participated in club swimming, so "swim fans" really are not familiar with her name. Also, Laguna Beach high school is a Division 3 school, so alot of people will underestimate how fast she might swim. Annika's CIF swim times are solid, but not remarkable: 1:54.66 200 free, 52.97 100 free.

Cindy Tran has a huge fan base because she has been a part of the swim scene for more than 10 years.

  • Natasha Grey says:

Go Mary! I keep on voting because MAry deserves it more than anyone else. She doesn't just perfect her skills but helps everyone else on the team to be the best they can be. She is amazing and inspires us to excel in what we love
    whoohoo

  • Peggy Sue Grey & Ron says:
