Some of the best boys golfers in the country will tee off on Tuesday at Hacienda Golf Club to play for the Sourthen Section Individual title, and hopefully earn a spot in the SCGA Southern California championships next week in Murrietta. Players from Servite, Westlake, Great Oak and Beverly Hills; however, are already in the SCGA event because their respective teams finished in the top four of the CIF-SS Team Championships.
Here’s some of the players that I will be keeping an eye on when I am at the tournament tomorrow:
1. Patrick Cantlay, Servite: What more can you say about him. He has had an incredible run in the postseason, shooting in the 60s in all three of his CIF matches. In his last three tournaments, he’s a combined 17 under par
2. Mario Clemens, Beverly Hills: He’s the only one that has been able to challenge Cantlay so far this CIF playoff season, matching the 69 that Cantlay shot at the team championship at Rancho San Marcos. He shot a 69 at the North Individual Regional at Sterling Hills Golf Club.
3. Rak Cho, Brea: He’s in the top 25 of the AJGA Polo national rankings, only three spots behind Cantlay. He shot a 1-over 73 in the Southern Individual Regional at Skylinks in Long Beach
4. Austin Raanes, Quartz Hill: He earned a tee time in the section championships after winning Nothern Regional at Sterling Hills with a 66
5. Anthony Kim, Gahr: He shot a 5-under 67 at Skyliks during the Southern Regional and finsihed second, two strokes behind Cantlay
6. Boris Stantchev, Long Beach Wilson: He finished third at the Southern Regional after carding a 3-under 69
7. Kevin Dougherty, Vista Murrieta: He won the Central Regional at Mission Lakes Country Club with a 68.
8. Bryan Bergna, Poly/Riverside: He was the only other player to shoot in the 60s at the Central Regional, also finishing with a 68.
9. Alex Bungert, Villa Park: The Century League champĀ shot a 2-under 70 at the Southern Regional. Plus, he’s been one of the most consistent golfers on one of the best boys teams in the county.
10. Ryan Tetrault, Villa Park: Just like Bungert, his teammate, he also shot a 70. But the spohomore definitely has the talent to do better than that, not that there’s anything wrong with a 70, mind you. He was a 12-time medalist for the Spartans this season.
11. Ty Greztky, Oaks Christian: He’s the son of NHL mega-superstar hall of famer, Wayne Gretzky, so that one reason to check out what he’s doing on Tuesday. But he also knows how to swing a golf club. He shot a 69 at the Notrh Regional
