Baseball playoffs: A week’s worth of highlights

baseball_iconIf you’re still standing after the first week of playoffs, then congratulations. (At least I survived it.)

Here are some of my noteworthy highlights for the week:

Tuesday, May 19

** Huntington Beach’s Kory Kovac (3 for 4) and Buddy Johns (3 for 3) had big days at the plate as the Oilers defeated John Glenn, 14-8, in a Division II wild-card game.

** Laguna Hills’ Robert Refsnyder was 2 for 3 with a home run, his 10th of the season, as the Hawks topped Wilson of Hacienda Heights, 6-1. Greg Faustini drove in four runs and scored two for the Hawks.

** Jimmy Litchfield of Sonora pitched a complete-game victory, allowing one run as the Raiders defeated Temple City, 6-1.

** Travis McGee of Brea Olinda pitched a four-hit shutout as the Wildcats defeated Moorpark, 1-0. Remington Miller provided the offense with a solo home run in the fifth.

** Matt Florer’s two-run double in the sixth helped lead Mission Viejo to a 2-0 road victory over M.L. King. Willie Kuhl (6-3) earned the victory and Scott Brattvet got the save.

Thursday, May 21

** Foothill scored seven runs in the first inning against Atascadero on the way to an 11-2 victory. Colin Wellmon improved his record to 8-2.

** El Toro’s Aaron Wirsch ran his record to 11-0 by leading the Chargers to a 4-2 victory over Rancho Cucamonga. Wirsch allowed four hits and struck out 10.

** The Chargers trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but they scored a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

** Pacifica scores six runs in the third inning on the way to a 9-3 victory over Bellflower. Brett Gerritse (10-1) earned the victory for the Mariners.

** Johnny Brewer was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Mariners, Trent Chatterton had three hits and Kyle Davis hit a two-run home run.

** Cypress survives a seven-run sixth inning by Buena to hold on for an 11-10 victory.

** David Nick of Cypress hit two home runs in the victory.

**Beau Amaral of Huntington Beach sealed a 5-3 victory over Chino with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

** Christian Belleque improved to 9-1 as Fullerton defeated Baldwin Park, 13-2.

** Fullerton’s Dominic Ficociello was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and a home run, Michael Lorenzen was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBIs and  Simon Poti had two hits and four RBIs.

** Anaheim scored 12 runs through the first three innings and went on to beat La Canada, 14-3.

** La Habra’s Christian Salinas (6-3) pitched a complete game to lead the Highlanders to a 6-1 victory over Savanna. Zach Esquerra was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

** Garrett Levsen of Sonora allowed two runs on three hits in a complete-game effort and a 12-2 victory over Victor Valley. He also went 3 for 4 with a home run.

** Sonora’s Jimmy Litchfield and Steven Mancilla both went 3 for 4 and hit home runs. Litchfield had three RBIs and Mancilla had two.

** Sage Hill first baseman Chris Griffin was 3 for 4 with two doubles, and AJ Wolfson was 2 for 3 in an 11-6 victory over St. Anthony. Alex Jimenez improved to 10-1 for Sage Hill.

** Oxford Academy’s Daniel Lucak was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, and a home run in a 10-1 victory over Upland Christian.

** Saddleback Valley Christian’s Tyler Grove pitched a five-hit shutout in a 17-0 victory over California Lutheran.

Friday, May 22

**Tesoro’s Ryan Goodbrand improved to 8-0 with a four-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over Long Beach Poly.

** Tesoro’s Conner Spencer had three hits. Anthony Hutting was 2 for 4 with a home run, and Micah Gorman was 2 for 4 with a triple.

** Aaron Northcraft of Mater Dei allowed two runs on four hits in a 6-2 victory over Saugus. Northcraft improved to 9-2. Cory Hahn was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.

**Kurt Heyer of Edison allowed one run on two hits, improving his record to 10-2 in an 11-1 victory over Lakewood. Heyer recorded seven strikeouts.

** Ryan Little and Josh Lesinski hit home runs for Edison and Eric Snyder went 3 for 4.

** Willie Shaw’s two-run single in the fifth inning helped Orange Lutheran to a 3-1 victory over Canyon.

** Orange Lutheran’s Bobby Wheatley pitched 6  2/3 innings for the victory and Andrew Thurman recorded the save with help from a sliding catch by Dillon Bryant with two outs in the seventh inning and the bases loaded.

** Tyler Matzek of Capistrano Valley pitched four no-hit innings, leading the Cougars to an 8-4 victory.

** Charles Pfirrman hit a grand slam in a five-run second inning for the Cougars.

** Grahamm Wiest of JSerra ran his record to 8-0 in a 3-2 victory over Adolfo Camarillo. Wiest allowed one run and struck out nine in 6  2/3 innings.

** Villa Park survived a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh to hold off Royal for a 2-1 victory. Daniel Warwick got the victory and Nolan Hoppie pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save.

** He’s not a county player, but he’s good nonetheless. Norco’s Matt Hobgood hit two home runs and threw a one-hitter, defeating Brea Olinda, 5-1.

** Eric Ehlow of Dana Hills pitched a complete game and hit a home run, leading the Dolphins to a 6-3 victory over Rio Mesa. Peter Tago had a triple, home run and drove in three runs in the victory.

** Mitch Sands doubled in Beau Attyah, who also doubled, in the 13th to lead Corona del Mar to a 5-2 victory over California. Danny Moskovits had two doubles and scored two runs for CdM.

** Robert Refsnyder of Laguna Hills hit two home runs and drove in five runs, but the Hawks lost to Lancaster, 13-12.

** Beckman broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to defeat Hawthorne, 6-1. Ryan Harris and Edgar Zamora combined to allow three hits. Zamora (8-1) got the victory.

** Whittier Christian pitchers Sam Sadler (5-0) and David Macias (save) combined to pitch a one-hitter in a 3-2 victory over St. Joseph of Santa Maria.

** Marina attacks Hueneme, scoring 18 runs on 19 hits in an 18-2 victory. Jason Aden had three hits and three RBIs, Slater Davis had two two hits and three runs scored, and Tyler Rinker was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

**Ocean View’s Freddy Sepulveda pitched a complete game and Blake Hitchcock was 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 9-3 victory over Paloma Valley.

**Andrew Bynum, Aaron Delgado and Kevin Nance all had two hits apiece for the Seahawks.

**Marcus Leppo (Eastside Christian) recorded 12 strikeouts  and one run on four hits in a 15-1 complete game victory over California Military Institute.

    Will someone with baseball knowlage ever realize its not just wins but ERA , walks to strikeout ratio, etc. You can get a win pitching one Inn. or giving up 4,5,6,7 runs. Look at the total picture and then pick the top pitchers!
