Tom ShieldsEdison's Tom Shields has just smashed the national high school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a blazing time of 1 minute, 33.83 seconds here at the Division I swim prelims at Mt. SAC in Walnut.

Shields smashed the national public record - and also Orange County record - of Eric Diehl of Mission Viejo - who had a 1:35.35 in 1991.

He also easily took down the national private school record of 1:34.96 .

"I was going for it but not by that much," a surprised Shields said. "I never thought I could go that fast this year."

Shields was his typical classy himself afterward - calm fist pump, hugged swimmer Jon Daniec of Mission Viejo when he climbed out of the pool and waved a few times to the crowd.

Awesome swim!

Tom Shields is the all the buzz here - "It's insane," Yucaipa senior Trevor Hoyt said. "Amazing and wow."

    Congratulations Tom! Great swim!

Awesome swim, Tom! The last 3 national public school record holders were all Mission Viejo Nadadores! Go Nads!

That prelim swim would have seeded Shields first going into the finals@ Pac-10's too. Great Job! Bet Cal Coach David Durden is smiling....

Tom Shield's swim was thing of beauty! He makes it look so effortless and is very humble. Had him on my watch with a 43.7 as the anchor in the 400 free relay. Dan you nailed it when you said his celebration was first rate. Yucaipa looks unbeatable in boys and Hart's girls are ridiculous! Was expecting more from Capo boys? Don't think they had their best day today. Michael Matchett out of Dana hills was dominant in the sprints and qualified first in 100 free and 2nd in the 50 free.

edison girls are ahead on paper by over 60 points - watch out for loyola boys they are out in front acutally.

  • Bradley Smith, M.D. says:

Tom talent is remarkable, but Dan's point of his "class" is what we will remember in addition to his great swims. Tom has a changed life and has been a good example and role model for all the boys from Freshmen to his fellow Seniors on the team this year. Congratulations Tom !!

my bad on edison girls and loyola boys. no disrespect. i don't keep track of points but it seemed all i heard all day was girls from hart and boys from yucaipa performing well over the speakers. numbers are numbers, i'm just looking forward to friday night getting to watch shields do his thing one last time! i think he will also get the national 100 fly record as well.

  • R.A. Shields says:

I proudly have watched Tom since he was a baby. I know how he has always had class. I could not be more proud than I am right now. I feel this is just the beginning. He has worked very hard and has earned the admiraton of us all. - Papablufire
