Coin flips will be HUGE in these playoffs!

    • Predictor
      Thanks for these.
My early gut feeling is San Clemente beating Newport Harbor. The Tritons lost to the Sailors in last year’s playoffs and I think that driving force is going to be enough.
      We’ll see though.
Also, I think the Santa Margarita-Esperanza match in Round 2 is a coin flip. Gonna go five games.

      • SC Fan says:

No SC Newport match up!!!! Now we will never know!!!
How do you like the SC vs St. John game?

  • tippin says:

I like Aliso’s chances, Caroompas is amazing.

    • tippin
It’s a great first round match.
Caroompas is going to have to catch fire the whole match though for them to beat Mater Dei.
In the end, I just can’t see the senior-laden Monarchs losing this match. They are going to be hyped, especially coming off a loss to Orange Lutheran, and the opportunity to host CdM at home in the second round.

  • Chuck Norris says:

Aliso will have a huge fan base, which is all the more rowdy considering aliso’s athletics are normally garbage, and thrive off the energy of their fans. If they catch fire, and their crowd gets behind them, expect the upset over the heavily favored Monarchs.

    • Chuck Norris
You bring up a great point. Aliso’s home fans will be rocking.
One thing to keep in mind is Mater Dei is used to that. Playing on the road in the Trinity League is brutal, and I don’t see it affecting them too much.

    Chris

The newport vs san clemente game will come down to home court advantage i think. but Newport has only lost one game on the road….at Mira Costa, and they beat esperanza in 3 at home i think.

  • VB-parent says:

This game (SC and Newport) should be played in a neutral site…Why? Because a coin flip shouldn’t be allowed to decide this match!

    • VB-parent
It would be nice if the coaches decided on that ahead of time, but I think whichever coach wins the coin flip is going to take home court advantage.
I still like San Clemente either way. The Tritons played at Newport Harbor in last year’s final, and that has to give them some confidence being familiar with the Sailors gym.
At the same time, the Sailors played in front of a large, loud crowd at Esperanza and had no problems winning.
In the end, whoever plays the most mistake-free is going to win.

  • pancake says:

Newport does not make very many mistakes. SC will have to force errors

    • pancake
You definitely have to beat Newport. They don’t beat themselves.

      • OcCoach says:

Chris; Very good point, Newport’s strength’s are their ball control and they do not miss many serves. If San Clemente is to beat them they better get very good passing from their back row. If Metzger can’t set his MD’s they will be in big trouble very early on! Also, leep in mind that Newport has been riding a pretty long winning streak and all streaks eventually come to an end. Also their are always some upsets early on. Look for some good teams to bow out early.
I would say Mira Costa & Loyola are the teams to beat. Imagine if one of these two teams get upset. The team that beats them will have the confidence to win it all.
