Edison swimmer Tom Shields will be back in the 200-yard freestyle at next week’s Division I prelims but his second individual event won’t be the 100 free – which he raced at the Sunset League finals Friday. The Cal-bound senior has opted for the butterfly, which he hasn’t raced much this spring. Shields, of course, is the Division I record-holder in the event, so the move isn’t too surprising.
But in terms of Shields going after the national record in the 100 free – that now seems remote. He could try a lead off in the 400 free relay but that likely will not happen in finals. Edison needs its best anchor swimming anchor. I also doubt Edison will lead off Shields in the 400 free in prelims. In Division I, you’ve got to be all-business in prelims and I think Edison will want to practice for Friday’s finals.
Shields, however, has a great chance at the national record in the 200 free – and that’s plenty for him to shoot for now.
On Saturday, the CIF seeded the entries for next week’s CIF divisional prelims. The results will be released Sunday at polytechnic.org/cifss at 10 a.m.
