Boys volleyball: Thursday’s recap

boys_volleyball_icon3Here are some of the highlights from around the county, as league action comes to a close.

In the Sunset League:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 0: Hamilton Day, Richard De St. Jean, and JD Green had 11 kills, as the Sailors (23-7, 10-0) wrapped up a perfect league season with a 25-20, 25-11, 31-29 victory over the Barons (11-19, 1-9) at Newport Harbor High.

No. 7 Esperanza 3, Marina 1: The trio of Chris Hartig, Kevin Smith, and Tyler Russie combined for 36 kills, while Brett Anderson dished out 53 assists, as the Aztecs (19-5, 7-3) knocked off the Vikings (17-14, 1-9) at Marina High.

No. 8 Edison 3, Los Alamitos 0: The host Chargers (16-11, 7-3) picked up the three set win over the Griffins behind 15 kills from Dillon Auxier and 38 assists from Jeff Newell.

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 San Clemente 3, Aliso Niguel 2: Ian Castellana had a team high 23 kills, while Hudson Glover and Grayson Overman combined for 25 kills, as the Tritons (24-7, 10-0) pulled out a 31-29, 26-28, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10 victory over the Wolverines at San Clemente High.

Mission Viejo 3, Capistrano Valley 2: Spencer Rowe led the Diablos with 16 kills, as Mission Viejo rallied from a two sets down to stun the Cougars 24-26, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-11 at Mission Viejo High.

Tesoro 3, Dana Hills 1: Parker Kalmbach had a team-high 13 kills, while Michael Nielson added 12, as the Titans rallied past the Dolphins 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 26-24 at Tesoro High.

In the Sea View League:

No. 9 Foothill 3, El Toro 0: The host Knights (15-12, 9-1) finished league play with a share of the league title after a three set win over the Chargers 25-20, 25-22, 25-11. Dane Worley led the way with 19 kills.

No. 10 Huntington Beach 3, Woodbridge 0: The Oilers clinched at least a share of the league title with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-22 decision over the Warriors at Woodbridge High.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 3, Sage Hill 0: The Tartans (13-3, 10-0) completed an undefeated league season with a 25-21, 25-22, 27-25 triumph over the Lightning (13-5, 7-3) at Sage Hill High.

In the Alpha League:

Windward 3, Whittier Christian 0: Despite 13 kills from Paul Wilson and 24 assists from Zach Cokley, the Heralds took the lost 23-25, 23-25, 11-25 at Windward High.

In the Century League:

El Modena 3, Brea Olinda 0: Spurred by 16 kills from Connor Olbright, the Vanguards (18-6, 10-0) completed a perfect league season with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 triumph over the Wildcats (10-8, 4-6).

Villa Park 3, Canyon 1: The Spartans ended the regular season with a four set win over the Comanches 20-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 at Villa Park High.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 3, Pacifica 0: Eric Tran put down 17 kills, and Devon Nittea passed out 32 assists, as the Centurions wrapped up an undefeated league season with a 25-13, 25-17, 26-24 win over the Mariners at Cypress High.

Loara 3, Valencia 1: Behind 18 kills from Mike Jones and 13 kills from Matt Neuschafer, the Saxons (10-8, 7-3) beat the Tigers in four sets 25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17 at Valencia High. Lucas Melone added 37 assists for Loara, who finishes in second place.
Kennedy 3, Katella 0: The Fighting Irish (11-9, 6-4) used nine kills from Matt Morinishi to defeat the Knights 25-22, 25-21, 27-25 at Katella High. Kennedy ends the season in third place.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Irvine 3, Laguna Hills 1: The Vaqueros knocked off the Hawks 25-22, 25-12, 16-25, 25-21 at Laguna Hills High. Trevor Hollabaugh and Mark Metrakos each led the way with 14 kills, while David Andrade added 12.

Beckman 3, University 0: The Patriots had six players record at least five kills in a 25-15, 25-21, 31-29 win over the Trojans at University High.
