Two seniors put the final touches on their league careers, while another one is just beginning.
Estancia’s Eli Zaidler and Danny O’Neil captured the doubles title by defeating Laguna Beach’s Rex Miller and Mikey Rubel 7-6, 6-4 in the final.
In the singles, Breakers junior Chris Lavery surprised teammate Jake Michaels 6-4, 6-4, to take home the singles championship. Michaels plays No. 1 singles for Laguna Beach and Lavery plays No. 2.
All finalists advance to the CIF-SS individual tournament on May 22.
“Mikey and Rex played real well,” Breakers coach Aaron Talarico said. “They fought the whole match. I’m happy with that. I’m hoping they bring that level into CIF. I’m looking forward to that.”
Talarico had a harder time watching the singles final with both his players squaring off. Lavery didn’t join the Breakers’ lineup until late March, and ended up winning the league title Wednesday, with a chance to defend it next year.
“As a coach I want both to win the league title,” Talarico said. “Chris played real well. Jake played real well. It was a really tight 6-4, 6-4.”
Lavery plays ambidextrous tennis. Check out what I wrote about him earlier this year.
