Tobolski: How I voted in the boys volleyball top 10

boys_volleyball_icon3Other than Newport Harbor, which continues to win and makes voting it the No. 1 team easy, it’s a wide open poll.

Here’s I voted for the team’s in this week’s poll. Check out the official top 10 here

Make sure to leave your thoughts and comments and where you would rank the teams below:

1. Newport Harbor: No brain No. 1 team. You just can’t make mistakes against them and hope to win.

2. Corona del Mar: There is some debate as to whether the Sea Kings deserve to be ranked this high, but CdM is cruising through league and is primed for a deep run in the playoffs.

3. San Clemente: There’s an argument that the Tritons could own the No. 2 spot, and in my personal opinion, either CdM or SC belongs there. My only rationale in keeping SC No. 2 is I had CdM No. 2 in the previous weeks, and they haven’t lost. They split head-to-head meetings this year.

4. Orange Lutheran: The Trinity trio is what screws this poll up more than anything. OLu beats SM, SM beats MD, MD beats OLu. That makes it simple when it comes to ranking these three teams. Feel free to disagree. Heck, my right brain and left brain disagree with each other. I have OLu ahead of the pack based on non-league results.

5. Santa Margarita: The Eagles have posted the non-league or tournament results that Mater Dei has, but beating a team twice head-to-head is why I have them ahead of the Monarchs.

6. Mater Dei: The best No. 6 team a county can have. The Monarchs play like the No. 1 team against everyone but Santa Margarita.

7. Esperanza: The Aztecs are a very good volleyball team. They lost twice to Newport Harbor this week to fall from No. 3 to No. 7. That’s a rough drop, one maybe not deserving of the boys, but it’s where I have them at this week.

8. Edison: The Chargers are an interesting team, and difficult to place. They’ve beaten Esperanza and  San Clemente this year, and could pull off the shocker by upsetting Newport Harbor this week.

9. Laguna Beach: The Breakers fell out of the county top 10, but there are No. 9 in my personal poll. It’s hard for me to drop a team out of the top 10 that hasn’t loss, despite their league schedule being a little weaker. What about CdM’s league schedule?

10. Huntington Beach: The debate here is whether to give this spot to the Oilers or Foothill, which beat HB in the teams’ first meeting. I think HB has had a better overall year, and even though they lost the head-to-head to Foothill, feel they belong in this spot over Foothill.

    I agree with HB ahead of Foothill mostly because Foothill is pretty much a one man show and unfortunatley he knows it. The sleeper this year will be Esperanza, the starting line up is young but they gel like veterans. Way to go Newport, very well coached team, they deserve it!!!

    Chris;

    You are a smart guy, O-Lu has beaten 6 of the OC Top-10 teams on the list above and pretty easily I might add!. Also they beat the number #1 team in the Nation “Loyola” @ Loyola. They also beat Long Beach Wilson and hammered Dana Hills @ DH and breezed through the OC Championship Tourney to only loose to Newport Harbor in the final game. I’ll bet you O-Lu makes it to the CIF finals vs. Loyola.
    That would be one heck of a re-match(the last one went 5) This team has a completely different mind set in tournamnet play!
