Boys volleyball: What’s Ahead (preview of last week of league)

boys_volleyball_icon3It’s the final week of league play across the county, and there are numerous storylines to watch develop.

We’ll break them down right here.

A look at the week ahead:

Trinity League battle: The league title is still up for grabs. Santa Margarita (7-1) is the front runner, with Orange Lutheran (6-2) and Mater Dei (7-2) chasing. The Eagles host the Lancers on Monday night. The Lancers host the Monarchs on Wednesday. Lutheran beat Santa Margarita in the first meeting, and Mater Dei beat OLu in their first meeting. The Eagles beat Mater Dei twice already. The  one thing I know for sure is the Eagles win the title outright if they don’t lose at all this week.

Sea View League fight: On Tuesday, this league championship is going to be decided. Huntington Beach and Foothill get together again. The Knights won on the Oilers home floor in four games last month to take over first place. A victory Tuesday over the Oilers will give Foothill the outright, undefeated league title. A HB victory will give the Oilers a share of the crown.

South Coast over?: The Tritons have clinched at least a share of its 8th straight championship, and with one victory in two matches this week will win it outright. However, San Clemente closes with upset-minded Aliso Niguel on Thursday. The Wolverines are currently tied for second place with Dana Hills and could take that spot outright by defeating the Tritons. San Clemetne swept the first meeting.

Sunset schedule: Newport Harbor has clinched at least a share of the title, but Edison could share it with the Sailors with a special week. They would have to beat Newport and have the Sailors lose to Fountain Valley. Plus, Esperanza and Edison are still fighting for second place, which would make a big difference come playoff seeding.

No. 1 vs. No. 2: As if the league races won’t be intriguing enough, the week gets capped off with a meeting of the county’s Nos. 1 and 2 teams. Newport Harbor visits Corona del Mar on Friday evening in what should be a great showdown, with the winner likely emerging as the No. 1 team heading into next week’s playoffs.

On a side note …: CIF is going to seed up to 16 teams this year, up from the normal 8 they do. Hopefully it will avoid terrible first-round match ups, and push those big matches into the second round and later where they belong.
