Baseball games of the week: Santa Margarita vs. Mater Dei

April 29th, 2009, 1:50 am · · posted by

This week I am picking the Top 5 Series of the Week. Here is one of them:

baseball_iconSanta Margarita (11-9, 6-3) vs. No. 1 Mater Dei (17-3, 6-3)

When: Wednesday at Mater Dei, 6:30 p.m.; Saturday at Santa Margarita, 6:30 p.m.

Outlook: Suddenly, Mater Dei’s road to a possible Trinity League title doesn’t look like a sure thing anymore.

The Monarchs split with Servite last week, while JSerra swept Orange Lutheran. That moved the Lions into sole possession of first place.

While all of that was happening, Santa Margarita was sweeping St. John Bosco to move the Eagles into a tie for second place with the Monarchs.

Are you following all of this?

Santa Margarita won the first meeting, 4-2, on March 27.

Robert Kelly pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits for the Eagles. Also in that game, Trayce Thompson hit two home runs.

He hasn’t hit a home run since April 11. He has seven on the season.

Can Mater Dei keep Thompson in the yard this week?

Can Mater Dei come up with a sweep to keep its title hopes alive?

(All games at 3:15 p.m., unless noted)

It turns out that this was certainly a worthy ‘game of the week’. I have to say that we should have won that game, but lost 11-4. After Robert Kelly pitched 7 great innings, we had a chance to stay in the game as it went to extra innings. In a close game, you need to make different decisions at the end in order to have a chance to win the game. We didn’t.

md beat u guys hands down.. they had 14 hits and sm had 2 on a day when northcraft was off. so that says a lot about ur hitters.also great sportsmanship by one of ur dads in the stands after the game towards the umpire and the use vulgar langage toward him.

MD is on the peeking point of their season and is going to be a contender in the long run..

also great first start by ryan teel whose a sophomore that went 3 for 4 with a single, double and triple along with 3 RBI’s. it looks like he has the spot the rest of the year..

see you saturday night for game 3 of the seriess>

I don’t have a favorite one way or another & this is the 2nd game I’ve seen between these teams.

So here is my opinion & observations:

    mdstduent10 …
Your dead on your assessment. MD is simply the better team or at least certainly has a lot more pitching depth. It appears SM only has the Kelly kid as a legitament varsity arm. The kid SM had to throw in the 8th inning was okay but that is not good enough against a team like MD.
MD’s defense is a little suspect but they can pitch & hit.
SM has Kelly & apparently nobody else. I won’t be at Saturdays game but this doesn’t bode well for SM on Saturday night.

    Eaglepop…

I agree with your assessment that it was agreat game & worthy of mention as a game of the week. But other than having to pull the SM starting pitcher after 7 innings & put in a kid who tried but looked simply overmatched, what could the SM coaches do? They executed all of their bunts in the game, played very solid defense (one misplay on the big league pop-up), & the starting pitcher was tremendous. SM had a few chances for clutch two out hits but didn’t come through but that is how it goes sometimes.

Parents, don’t over analyze things, the SM boys played great as did MD & it was a great HS game to watch. They were simply out hit & out pitched in the end.

Good luck to both teams Saturday. I wish I could be there but have other plans.

mdstduent10 – Don’t get cocky. MD is very good and should go a long way in the playoffs – if they take EVERY game seriously. MD has lost games this year because they get over confident. Every team in the Trinity league can beat any other team (as MD has found out). MD needs to play their A game every game.

  • So Cal Baseball Dad says:

Northcraft has been on a cold spell lately and still only gave up two hits..please how is SM going to hit Mccarty the better overall pitcher?

  • joe roth says:

could SM or Mater Dei please tell me how JSERRA is in first place. i thought this was a new program. have they not faced anyone. do they even have anyone who can play at the next level. i’m sure Mater Dei will win the league when its all over. Sorry JSERRA just don’t know much about you.

  • Lioniizer says:

Joe kurasch is signed to play with cal. Brett dahlson is a phenomenal ball player and sophomore austin hedges is a monster of a 16 yr old. Theyre a solid ballclub
