Some league races are heating up. Some are already over.
Here’s a look at a trio of league matches to follow today:
No. 3 Esperanza at Los Alamitos (Sunset League, 5:45 pm)
A much bigger game for the Aztecs than the Griffins. Esperanza lost a tight 5-game match to Newport Harbor on Monday night, the team’s second loss in league. It can’t afford to lose again if it hopes to capture the Sunset League title, and needs some help from the Sailors as well. It’s always dangerous playing a hungry upset-minded Los Al squad after a tough loss. The flip side could be the Aztecs are so fired up and take out all their aggression on the Griffins.
Calvary Chapel at No. 9 Laguna Beach (Orange Coast League, 5:15 pm)
Heading into league play, the Eagles were supposed to give the Breakers their stiffest challenge. However, Laguna Beach swept the first meeting, and the Eagles lost to Costa Mesa. The rematch is upon us, and now is the Eagles chance to show what everyone expected in the preseason, them to push the Breakers. Laguna Beach is sure to be pumped up as the team hasn’t played many matches lately, so any match for them is a big match.
Beckman at Irvine (Pacific Coast League, 5:15 pm)
A showdown for second place. Both teams enter the match 3-2 in league. The winner takes over sole possession of second place, and sets themselves up for a likely better seeding come CIF. The difference between second and third place is typically a home match in the first round. Because of that, this one will play out like a playoff match.
