Boys volleyball: Three of the Day

boys_volleyball_icon3A trio of matches to follow today:

Laguna Beach at Costa Mesa (Orange Coast League, 5:30 pm)

The Mustangs (3-0) and Breakers (2-0) meet for first place. Besides playing for the top spot, each team has its own motivations. Costa Mesa upset Calvary Chapel, and now takes its shot at another upset. It would seem like the Mustangs would need to step their game up another notch to derail the Breakers, and they’ll be ready to try and do just that. Laguna Beach fell out of this week’s top 10 (I still voted them in) without losing a match and are sure to be fired up about that, not to mention they don’t want to have their league title hopes dashed tonight.

Beckman at Laguna Hills (Pacific Coast League, 5:15 pm)

It was a tough week for the Patriots last week with two losses to Corona del Mar. While no team should have to play the Sea Kings twice in a week, we’ll see if it got Beckman fired up to make a run for second place. The Patriots (1-2) are currently chasing the Hawks (1-1) in the standings, and can make that half-game up with a victory tonight. Laguna Hills has a chance to gain some separation and help its playoff shot further.

No. 4 Edison at Los Alamitos (Sunset League, 5:45 pm)

A testy match up for the Chargers (3-1), who’ll be fighting to stay in second place. The Griffins (2-2) can cause problems for anyone they face. They just haven’t gotten over the hump and won the big match yet. Edison best be prepared, or that could change. These teams met in the Orange County Championships, with Edison winning. The Chagers suffered their first defeat last week to Newport Harbor, and would like to gain some separation from Los Al in this one. For the Griffins, a victory in this could change their whole season.
