Chase Rettig
There stood the Tritons new quarterback, a transfer from La Salle, Chase Rettig, in the middle of Howard Jones Field on USC’s campus at Sunday’s Nike Camp waiting for his turn in the rotation.
Not far from Rettig stood Bob Johnson, coach of Mission Viejo, getting his first look at the Diablos’ future opponent. An interesting scene, but it wasn’t as if Rettig was trying to hide from Johnson.
“I went up to him and said I was the quarterback at San Clemente,” Rettig said. “and he said ‘That’s good.’ He called me over a couple of times and gave me some pointers.”
Rettig figures to replace Duke DeLancellotti as the Tritons starting quarterback, and it has brought a level of excitement and anticipation around it.
Rettig showed why Sunday, as he was among the best quarterbacks on the field.
“He had a great day,” ESPN Rise’s Greg Biggins said. “He was probably the No. 2 guy. He has a great frame. He’s built like a tank and he can spin it. He really helped himself.”
As for adjusting to his new location, that’s coming along fine as well.
“San Clemente has been great,” Rettig said. “It’s a great school and the coaches are awesome. I’m feeling good with everything.”
