Fellow Sunset League linebacker Cecil Whiteside liked what he saw from Edison’s Jordan Zumwalt. So did the coaches.
But Zumwalt felt he had more in him, accurate or not.
“Today was a lot of fun,” he said. “I did alright. Maybe I’m a hard critic, but I felt I didn’t make the plays.”
The linebacker coaching group would disagree. ESPN Rise’s Greg Biggins said Zumwalt was unblockable in the pass rushing drill.
“He was the runner-up for linebacker,” Biggins said. “The coaches love him. He’s big and rangy. He covers a lot of ground. He’s really strong. It’s funny, but maybe the best two guys here today were both from the same league.”
Whiteside was more impressed with Zumwalt’s day than he ways. Even though they compete against each other in league, Whiteside said he likes watching him play.
“He did well against some of the better running backs,” Whiteside said.
Zumwalt kept his approach to Sunday simple. He wanted to have fun. He said he didn’t put too much into it, because “football is meant to be played with the pads on.”
Though the junior linebacker may be hard on himself, he also confirmed what he thought, and plans on using it for motivation.
“I learned that I could be a lot better,” he said. “That’s how I think.”
