
The San Clemente girls soccer team not only proved to be the county’s standard of excellence this past season, but they were among the best in the nation.
In the ESPN RISE FAB 50 girls soccer rankings, the Tritons finished the 2008-2009 season ranked No. 2 in the country.
Melbourne High in Florida was the top ranked team in the county according to publication, after going 23-0-1 and winning the Florida 6A state title.
Last month, the co-South Coast league Tritons (29-4-1) became the first girls’ team in state history to win both the CIF-SS Division I title and the CIF Southern California Regional title in the same season.
San Clemente was one of four county teams that ended the season ranked in the top 10 of the national rankings.
-Esperanza (22-2-3), who lost to San Clemente on penalty kicks in the CIF-SS Division I quarterfinals, finished the season ranked seventh.
-Los Alamitos (22-5-5) the Sunset League champion and CIF-SS Division I runner-up to San Clemente, was ranked ninth.
-Aliso Niguel (22-2-3) co-champion of the South Coast League and CIF-SS Division I semifinalist, was ranked 10th.
Also, Trinity League champion and CIF-SS Division I quarterfinalist Mater Dei (14-4-5) was ranked No. 22nd, and co-Sea View League champion and CIF-SS Division I semifinalist El Toro (18-5-2) was ranked 26th.
