It’s a light load today, and it features a mega matchup in the Sunset League
No. 1 Newport Harbor at No. 5 Edison (Sunset League, 5:45 pm)
It doesn’t get any better than this. The Chagers are 3-0 and the Sailors are 2-0. First place is on the line, as is the unblemished record. The teams managed to avoid playing each other through tournament play, and both are playing as good as they have all season. The question in this one is can the Sailors defense wear down the Chargers attack. Edison has more weapons, but Newport can force good offenses into hitting errors because they get hands on lots of balls. The atmosphere should be playoff-like, with the winner emerging as the league favorite.
Beckman at No. 2 Corona del Mar (Pacific Coast League, 5:15 pm)
A rematch of Tuesday, the Sea Kings will be looking to play a sharp match heading into their Santa Barbara tournament this weekend. The Patriots are sure to be fired up after holding a 24-22 lead in Game 3 before suffering the sweep. All the signs would point to another convincing victory by Corona del Mar, but stranger things have happened (though the Sea Kings haven’t lost a league match since 2005).
Marina at Los Alamitos (Sunset League, 5:45 pm)
Two really good teams stuck in a league with three really great teams. Such is life for the Vikings and Griffins. Marina pushed Newport Harbor to five games in a testament to what they can do. Los Alamitos has played all the best teams. This match is about pride, and pushing for a hard-fought triumph. They both deserve one, but only one is going to get it.
