On Thursday, Foothill girls golfer Ashley Husbands presented a check for $3,865 to the Blind Children's Learning Center, which is located near the Knights' campus in Tustin.
Last season, Husbands started a charity drive that worked a lot like a jog-a-thon with classmates, parents, teachers and friends signing up to donate some money for every birdie the team holed this past fall. The Knights girls golf team finished with 38 birdies as they tied for the Sea View League championship.
Husbands got the idea to launch the fundraiser when she was surfing the web and stumbled upon the "Bridies for Wishes" program that golfers at Santa Clara University had. Husbands has been volunteering at the Blind Children's Learning Center for some time, and recalled that the school had to cancel some of its sumer activities due to lack of funding, so she decided to change all of that with her putter.
"When I played this year, I think I had an edge over everybody else, because I had two really important reasons to play well - get a win for the team and earn money for the children at the Blind Children's Learning Center(BCLC)," Husbands said.
